Which hob is best? Gas, Ceramic or Induction?

first world prob I know. Moving into new house and need to choose a hob style.

I'm aware that its very much a personal thing, but I'd like to get an idea of other types.

We've had gas for the last 10 years. I like using gas - I feel its 'controllable' - but I don't like how tricky the whole thing is to clean.

I am now faced with a choice and I don't really know what to pick

I don't cook loads but I use the hob at least once a day for bog standard stuff - pasta/rice, pan cooked chicken, stir fries and simmering bolognese and stuff.

Any opinions?

Well that's arm's length, so at least there's no need to worry about friends with pacemakers being in the house.

We had an induction hob fitted 4 years ago. It is amazing. It took about 3 months to get used to. Ikea Pans are cheap as chips and work with induction hobs.

I find the induction hob really easy to control and a doddle to clean. There's no way I'd go back to anything else.

Absolutely hate our induction hob, it’s really difficult to get fine control on it.

I and all my friends who have induction find the opposite. I could never reduce the flame on a gas hob as much as I can on induction. As a pp said, you can have induction so low it won't even simmer.

Gas is around 50% energy efficient, ceramic 65% and Induction 95%. Induction will allow you to melt chocolate at the lower levels and boil water faster than a kettle at the high levels. Get an induction kettle by the way, cheap to run, saves worktop space and it will never break as it's just metal. Check your pans with a magnet all over the base of the pan-cheap pans sometimes only have a magnetic core. More responsive, safer (my AGE switches itself off if there's a spill over the control area), quick heat up and faster cool down too.

Gas for me. I don’t find induction particularly easy to control, and get annoyed having to press to turn it up/down. The induction I’ve tried is a Neff, but find it quite frustrating to use. Totally agree hat from a cleaning point of view induction is amazing.

We have an induction range. I love the induction hob. Really easy to control and so fast. Also, do not underestimate the difference between wiping down a ceramic hob and faffing about cleaning a gas hob, pan rests, etc, etc.

Induction.

goingtotown · 24/02/2018 09:17

Why do professional cooks use gas hobs if induction is the way to go?

SellFridges · 24/02/2018 09:20

I have a friend who owns a very high end restaurant (Michelin were there last week). He has induction hobs.

Have gas in my rented home, its ok but a paint to clean, and I do tend to just catch things burning..

My UK home has ceramic hob thats a few years old now, range cooker ok but now looking to change whole kitchen and will defiantly be going for induction, they are fabulous.

Used one in a temp place where we stayed and was amazed at how quick things heat up, but hey do take a little time to get used to.

Did buy some good quality new pans last year and they can be used on both ceramic and induction.

Gas. Controllable and cheap - bottle of LPG lasts 8 months for about £35. Far less cleaning because it is controllable, and because we are on LPG we laugh at a power cut. Recognise not everyone can have the last.

Bigtree83 · 24/02/2018 10:19

I know some manufacturers have a 60cm hob which is 2 zone gas and 2 zone induction. Happy medium and no issues with power cuts. I also work with a Chinese cookery school who solely use induction and steam ovens (AEG I think) and the food is incredible.

For years we had range cooker with electric ovens and a gas hob.I loved it and wanted the same when we moved.DH liked the idea of induction,I was very unsure but designing our new kitchen we wanted a totally different look, and had less space so I was persuaded to go with an induction hob.Absolutely love it.Wouldn't go back to gas ever again. So quick and responsive and brilliantly easy to clean. Now I can't imagine pulling a gas hob and all the burners apart to clean after a big meal, or cooking a fry up.

TefalTester123 · 27/02/2018 14:31

Induction. Much safer with kids, and easier to get them cooking as you can say 'scrambled eggs - 6) for example. And can leave stuff on v low very easily.

I have a Neff with a magnetic control button that is removable. love it. Do not like the ones where you have to repeatedly press an invisible button.

tellitlikeitispls · 01/03/2018 11:18

I've ordered the induction. I'll get the pans from ikea and will look into induction kettles...
