Have you ever walked into the wrong house?

Whether it be walking into your own house or walking into what you thought was your friends/families house

Not me but when I was in high school my mate knocked on the door of a house 4 doors away thinking I lived there , I had to tell him that it was the wrong house.

On a dark wintry day, late in the afternoon my dm was bf my eldest sister. The were no lights on but the coal fire was burning,
The front door opened and she heard footsteps coming along the hallway and the living room door opened and two nuns stood there
In the gloom it gave my mother quite a shcok,,The nuns were looking for another house,They apologised and left but not before they had blessed my sister,

I frequently stand next to other people's cars wondering why my key isn't unlocking them. In my defence I drive a white Golf and so does every other fucker now apparently. But sometimes I actually think "ooh, it's cleaner than I remembered - has it been raining?" before I catch on.

Athenaeum I did that I was a teenager and looked back on it for years as the most embarrassing incident of my life. I'd then forgotten all about it until I saw your post - apparently it's faded into insignificance when compared to the many and varied humiliations of awkward adulthood.

borlottibeans · 16/02/2018 14:07

That should be Athena by the way - my autocorrect has decided to promote you to some kind of private members club, sorry.

I tried to get into next doors house the day we moved here. I'd moved on the morning and went out to celebrate my sister's birthday on the evening.

I was getting v pissed off that my key wouldn't work when the neighbour came out and pointed me to my own door. It's not how I'd planned on meeting my new neighbour Blush Luckily, he's a decent bloke and four years later, still sees the funny side. Me, otoh, I still cringe when I think about it. I'm moving again soon and will not be going out for drinks for a few months after I move.

I got into the wrong car at a petrol station once. Only realised when the dog in the passenger seat turned to look at me!

(wasn't even the same make of car - just vaguely the same colour)

Jux · 16/02/2018 15:09

I tried to get into the car after shopping. It was parked right there; as it was a very blustery and rainy day I put my head down and just headed straight for it. DH started reversing out of the space as I approached. 'How kind' I thought, 'he's making it easier for me to get in'. I grasped the door handle, the car continued to reverse and continued some more as I tried to retain a grip on the handle and open the door. Then I looked up. A stranger was driving our car. 'No, you bastard', I thought, 'I shall not allow you to do this'. Then I noticed that the interior was very different to ours, and it didn't contain the things it usually contains......

I apologised and made my way, thoroughly abashed, to our car which was parked right next to this car, to be welcomed by dh chortling at me with gay abandon. He still does that when he sees fit to remind me of it. Often BlushGrin

I also once lost my way to the flat my flatmate and I had just moved to. I was pissed as a fart, got the night bus home after a thoroughly good night out, but got off the bus far too early. I spent quite some time wandering about trying to find the right road and finally gave up. Glimpsing a police station I meandered there, and asked the desk sergeant where my home was. I think I hoped the cops would just pop me in a car and drive me home.

No, they laughed at me quite a lot and called a taxi for me. Bless 'em.

MY DF twice accidentally went into the caravan belonging to a Dutch family that was unfortunately placed in the middle of ours and my dsis's caravan. Both times he apologised profusely after saying "oops wrong caravan". On the third occasion he didn't even get a chance to say anything before the whole family chorused " oops wrong caravan".

I once held a murder-mystery party) so fancy-dress) at a friends house. Did all the cooking at mine a couple of roads away, and my brother arrived at mine early and volunteered to take some of the food round.

Friend's next door neighbours were quite surprised when a fat man in a beret and false moustache, wearing a blood spattered white coat with a string of garlic round his neck, carrying a large dish of lasagne, let himself into their house.

CotswoldStrife · 24/02/2018 23:47

Me and my DH were staying in a hotel with a large group when someone walked past me into my room. I think she was confused because I was standing outside with the door open talking to a mutual friend, but her room was actually on the floor above. My DH, who was inside the room at the time was surprised too.

FingerlingUnderling · 26/02/2018 12:22

This thread is brilliant! I walked up to the wrong car at work with my friend and could not work out why it would not open. I spent a good while clicking the key fob and then tried the key in the lock thinking the battery in the fob must have died. The only thing (apart from the inability to get in the car) that gave me a clue was different hubcaps.

deponia · 26/02/2018 12:27

I tried unlocking the door of the flat downstairs a few months ago - obviously the key didn't work. To be fair all the flat doors are identical and the layout of the floors are exactly the same - I'd taken the stairs so I just miscounted the floors.

sashh · 26/02/2018 12:43

I've had people walk in.

The first one I was upstairs, heard the door go, went tot he top of the stairs bloke asks for 'Fred' I say no he doesn't live hear, he said yes he does, ho told me he did, he'd told him the street and the white door, pointed out door was gray. He kept arguing, I got quite angry and told him to leave now - his gf/wife had followed him in and had to tell him I probably did know who lived in my house.

Different place, I lived next door and opposite a hostel for recovering alcoholics, one got the number wrong and walked in to my kitchen, was actually really nice, went to the hostel then came back to appologise again.

When I leave the window open there is a cat who lets himself in and settles down on the settee. He has a collar so must have a home.

I once put petrol in my car, after I had paid I went back to my car opened the door and thought, "my car doesn't have leather seats" fortunately the guy who's car it was thought it was funny.

I was also once in a hotel, had taken a bath, opened the bathroom door in only a towel to find a member of staff and another resident, they had assigned him my room. It was a training course so met him again at dinner.

The best on is my friend's incident, he lives on the 7th floor. He was woken up by someone letting themselves in via the balcony. He'd been in the flat above and couldn't get out the door so jumped and caught on to friend's anti pigeon netting.

threeelephants · 02/03/2018 16:05

I watched(from my front door!) my cousin knock repeatedly on a house 3 doors up from ours which has an identical front door. I tried to call him but he had earphones in. He eventually gave up, and started to wander back towards the bus stop! I had to chase him down the street! Grin

cherrytree63 · 12/03/2018 13:28

I couldn't get onto my driveway as a strange car was parked there.
After my initial excitement of the potential MN CF parking thread, I realised it was the wrong house.
Not only that, I was in the wrong street!!
