Water bill- don’t all jump at once!

Not the most exciting topic ever but just received my water bill for the next 6 months and seems a bit steep?

There’s me, DH and 2 DCs (under 8) semi detached 3 bed not big and metered water.

New bill quoting us £64 per month for water (that’s in and out combined bill) what do others of a similar set up pay? Curious to get comparisons although it’s not like we have an option to go elsewhere, we’re stuck with south east water.

Thanks Smile

Thames Water, £22 pm, 3 bed with 2 adults and 2 under 4's. Your bill does seem high OP.

We pay £23 per month for same kind of house, 1 fewer child. Check for a leak - see if the meter turns even if you're not using any water. And check the backs of the toilet bowls for running water. We had a high bill and it turned out to be a leaky toilet. Got it fixed and they put our bill straight back to what it was

Just to clarify are these amounts for your water in AND out? Or are they what you pay just for water in?

Mine is for both, they apparently did a meter reading on 30th Jan. I’m ashamed to admit I don’t even know where my meter is....

In and out - that's our whole bill per month, on a meter

TheChineseChicken · 09/02/2018 15:02

Look on the pavement in front of your house

£54 a month on a meter. 6 of us in the house. Live in the south west so automatically higher than I would like 🙂

We come under Yorkshire water, 4 bed house, kids shower 6 days a week, Dh and I every other day due to showering at the gym.

We use a dishwasher daily and I run the washing machine twice a day in the week.

Our bill is £30pm for in and out.

You have to pay for water?!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/02/2018 13:00

Our bill arrived yesterday. Water and wastewater, 1 August 2017 to 31 January 2018. 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Me, DH, DD (at uni term time but home holidays and many weekends), teen DS. Garden irrigation system. Washing machine, dishwasher etc. ALWAYS flush toilet (can’t bear the ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow” thing). Fish tank (with regular water changes), pond. We are careful not to waste water but use as much as we actually want (eg DH and I both showered twice yesterday and I’m hoping for a nice soak in the bath later).

Metered bill is £132.32.

I think it’s a bargain!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/02/2018 13:04

Maybe our water itself is cheap though. Our volume used over those 6 months is 45 cubic metres.

FannyHertz · 10/02/2018 13:11

I have no idea as my rent is inclusive of utility bills.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 10/02/2018 14:34

£42pm 3 teens (so lots of baths, showers, washing sport kits) and me in the Midlands. I believe that location affects price.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/02/2018 15:17

How much water does your bill say you’ve actually used OP? There is nothing you can do about unit costs but you can look at water usage and see if it’s reasonable.

specialsubject · 10/02/2018 15:28

You can't shop around, you are stuck with your local company. Some are pricier than others. If the meter is right and there is no leak, use less - normal showers of five mins not twenty, watch it with power showers, wash up once a day, don't water lawns , don't wash cars.

Water is never free so can't imagine anyone surprised at a water bill.
