White white

How do I keep my white things white? Specifically duvets and towels really, although other things too I guess. I always choose white bedding and towels but they seem to go grubby really quickly. I only ever wash whites on their own and do a hot wash in towels and bedding. Any other ideas?

Don't know but would like to know.

DavidBowiesNumber1 · 30/01/2018 17:01

I'd like to know too. I wash whites separately, on a 60c or 90c, never dry them in sunlight but still they are full. It pains me so much Grin

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 30/01/2018 17:05

You need to wash with biological powder, not any sort of liquid. The powder has bleaching agents. Repeat use of washing liquid turns white things grey.

dementedpixie · 30/01/2018 17:07

I use bio powder (has bleaches in it) and a scoop of fake vanish powder for whites

mando12345 · 30/01/2018 17:08

I use ariel biological powder for my whites, agree with others powder is better than liquid for white.

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 17:08

I like the way fashion writers always go on about the perfect white shirt when reality is a white shirt for a few washes then a grubby looking shirt.

I thought it was non-bio that had the bleach in?

dementedpixie · 30/01/2018 17:10

Both non bio and bio powder have bleaches. Bio also had enzymes to break down organic stains

Anythingforacatslife · 30/01/2018 17:11

Bio powder on a 60 wash, no colours allowed in at all. Seems to work for us.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 30/01/2018 17:12

I find that powder is definitely better than liquid - same applies to the dishwasher!

Fintress · 30/01/2018 17:14

I use Napisan. It's also brilliant for getting yellow sun cream marks out of clothes and bikinis.

DavidBowiesNumber1 · 30/01/2018 17:35

I always use powder (and plenty of it) but still my whites aren't white Confused

Mammyofonlyone · 30/01/2018 19:24

Looks like I'm off to buy some powder! Thanks!

Clean your machine too.

Soda crystals and put the machine on a really long wash.

Dry white stuff outside when possible as well

SingingSands · 30/01/2018 20:03

Oh. I thought you said “white wine”.
I clicked to see what household tips involved wine. Blush

Maggiewashere · 31/01/2018 08:55

If powder alone doesn't do the trick, add some Vanish Gold for whites. It made a big difference when my white towels looked a bit grey. They looked quite dazzlingly white!

Mammyofonlyone · 31/01/2018 08:58

Hahahahaha singing brilliant.

Maggie thanks will try those

Powder will help loads. After my machine got really awful smelling last year, the engineer recommended that I only used powder instead of liquitabs, which I had previously used for about 7 years. I swapped to Ariel bio. I buy the normal one and the colours one. My whites are much, much whiter than before. I've always added a scoop of vanish to all whites washes, and I still do that. But as that hasn't changed, it isn't that which is making the difference. It is definitely switching to powder that has made the difference.

daisychicken · 31/01/2018 09:01

I do white washes with a Dr beckman whitener sachet (at least every other wash) and a small spoon of biological washing powder plus I hang outside on the line as much as I can. My whites are white.

The sachets made a huge difference in helping them look bright and white and I really recommend using them.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 31/01/2018 09:05

What is Napisan? Where do I get it and how do I use it ??!!!!!

WellTidy · 31/01/2018 09:12

Napisan is found on the aisle with all the nappies, baby wipes etc. It generally isn't with all the laundry stuff.

MikeUniformMike · 31/01/2018 09:41

The 'vanish' stuff is a powder and it contains non-chlorine bleach, I think, which is also in sterilising liquids like Milton's and napisan.

e1y1 · 01/02/2018 02:17

Yes yes, as everyone has said, it MUST be powder (any except “colour care” or “eco” versions).

Or if not powder, then Vanish powder along with your ordinary detergent, Vanish is basically washing powder - bleaches and enzymes (minus the surfactants) just in a much higher concentration.
