Smoke smell

ShuttyTown · 28/01/2018 19:45

I've been given a single divan bed plus mattress and mattress topper from my DM for my DD's room. My DF smokes and the bed stinks. You can smell it when you walk in my DD's room, she's only 1 so I'm quite worried about it.

Anyone have any ideas if I can spray anything on it (Febreeze hasn't worked) or use anything to get rid of the smell? I can't just get rid of it and buy a new one unfortunately Sad

Wash the mattress topper? And wait for a sunny day and get the mattress outside in the sunshine?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 28/01/2018 19:50

I'm sorry, you're going to have to get rid of it. It is not safe for her to sleep in.

Why can't you get rid of it? Lack of money or not wanting to upset your parents? If the former, can you get a bed from freecycle/a selling page? You'll need a new mattress, but cotbed mattresses aren't generally that expensive.

With the divan, get loads of bicarb, sprinkle it very liberally over the divan then use a scrubbing brush to work it in. Leave it for a couple of hours then hoover thoroughly.

Was the mattress topper on as hot a wash as it says you can.

I can't wash the mattress topper it's one of those foam 'egg box' type ones, hence wondering if I could spray it with something. If it had been summer I'd have put it outside but it's not really doable in this horrible winter weather yet.

Ok I'll do the bicarb thing, could I do that on the mattress too?

Yes, it's somewhat disconcerting how much cleaner the mattress looks when you start hoovering it off. You do have to really brush it in.

whateveryousay · 28/01/2018 19:54

I would definitely replace the mattress topper then, if it can't be washed. They aren't that expensive, compared to a new mattress. And that's the bit anyone would actually be sleeping on.

ShuttyTown · 28/01/2018 19:55

It's a bit of both @AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight.

She's not sleeping in it yet it's in her room, we needed a bed as she's a terrible sleeper and me or DH were ending up on the sofa with her most nights so a bed in her room was a good solution.

It's not a cotbed mattress it's a full size single bed.

Should I get rid?

Ok I'll bin the mattress topper then and do the bicarb on the rest and if it's no better I'll scrap the lot. Thanks everyone Smile

Get rid, it wont be nice for her to sleep in, you could get one from a charity shop or online, if you can't afford it you can ask for a grant from social services,.

Worldsworstcook · 28/01/2018 19:59

Can you spray the hell out of it with something like the dettol dry spray and put the whole mattress into a zip round mattress cover? Got one for DS1 and DD for university mattresses in case of germs or nasties from previous tenants.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 28/01/2018 19:59

I'm sorry, but I would, yes.
She won't need a full-size bed for a while yet. IIWY I would get a 140x70 cotbed or 160x70 toddler bed (with a rail). Ikea does cheap ones.

Do you mean the plan is to sleep with her in the bed in her room? I'd have her in with you and the other parent (if they are being disturbed) go and sleep on the sofa.

I sympathise, having a bedsharing 2yo terrible sleeper myself, but she really, really can't be allowed to sleep in a bed so contaminated with smoke that it smells when you go into the room.

meandmytinfoilhat · 28/01/2018 20:02

I washed my sons mattress topper that was like that. It was fine.

ShuttyTown · 28/01/2018 20:18

Thank you @Worldsworstcook I've ordered that mattress cover.
I've also ordered a new duvet and pillow and will bin the mattress topper.

I'll scrub bicarb in tomorrow.

I appreciate people are telling me to get rid but I'll try these methods first as it could work. My DD goes to their house every day of the week as I work so she's exposed to smoke there too. My DF doesn't smoke in the same room but he smokes in a utility type room off the kitchen. It's a whole other thread about my past requests for him to smoke outside but it's always fallen on deaf ears I'm afraid.
