100% Wool Rug Cleaning

I have a cream (questionable right now) rug which is gross in places and generally grubby everywhere else and I'm wondering what to do with it. I'd like to keep and use it but, I'm a bit worried about carpet shampooing it. On the other hand, I don't think I can afford to have it specialist cleaned which is what I think the long lost label said to do. So, have you ever shampooed a wool rug successfully? Any tips for getting it right, please?

I also have a looped wool rug (think loopy cardigan type loopy) which was in Ds's room which I'm considering putting in the machine. I'm a bit scared! It's very thick and heavy!

Advice, tips etc very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't put a thick and heavy rug in a machine as once wet it will become supremely heavier and you are at risk of breaking your washing machine with the weight of it on spin cycle.

I have used Dr Beckmanns carpet cleaner stuff on our wool rug and it worked really well. It has a brush attached to the nozzle so you can really work it into the pile. Wilkos sell it.

I have washed wool rugs. I soaked a huge thin one in the bath and rinsed and rinsed it. it was ok but took ages to dry in sunshine.
I wouldn't risk putting it in the washing machine. It will remove any finish.

I have a thick wool rug that could probably do with a thorough clean but I will probably use a carpet shampoo this time, even though I'd like to give it a good soak.

If it was expensive get it specialist cleaned but I would just shampoo it.

I have used carpet cleaner on a red wine stain and it wasn't a complete success but was a lot better.

Hi,
Don't use hot water or it will felt. I would use cold water to get out as much as you can then very Luke warm might be a possibility but I am a felter and to make felt you agitate pure wool with hot water and soap! So be careful. If you have a bath or shower I would do it in there or use a Vax on it but fill it with cold to tepid water otherwise you will have a felted mat on your hands.

Tip: never buy cream, white rugs😃

Hire a carpet cleaner and do your carpets and the rug over a weekend.

Thank you all for your advice; I appreciate it.

The loopy rug would be nigh on impossible to clean with a carpet shampooer I think but, I may give the other cream one a go. The loopy one might have to go in the bath then - although my machine is a 10kg loader...

Thanks again Thanks
