Cleaning the sofa?

We have a fabric sofa and it's been well and truly childrened... just general marks and stains, not drawing toy damage.

We were going to replace when the children grew older, but now we are moving abroad, we don't want to rebuy.

We can remove the covers, but isn't that a bad idea? So how on earth can I get them clean enough..

I know exactly what you mean! I have twin boys and it is so difficult to keep the sofa clean (especially since we made the mistake of purchasing a light cream sofa set!) But I found this article about upholstery cleaning really helpful www.why-bother.co.uk/blog/do-it-yourself-upholstery-cleaning-tips/
Perhaps it will give you a few tricks of the trade. I think if you're removing the covers, you will have to be careful to clean and dry them in a way that doesn't shrink them. Good luck!

Thank you. I'll have a look through that Smile

Original Stardrops in warm water is great for cleaning upholstery. I used it on a very grubby sofa the cat liked to sit on and it came up like new.

I've just used a mix of washing powder and hot water to clean ours down in the past.

wowfudge what do you do with it?

We just wash our removable covers at 40 with normal detergent then dry on line or radiator. And we do it a lot as they are cream and we have a toddler and a dog.

With our old sofa, I just put all the cushion covers in the machine on a normal wash and they came out clean and were fine.

According to the sofa shop lady, if I attempt to do this with the new sofa covers, they will all stick together as the fire retardant will not deal with going in the machine. I have no idea if this is true and don’t want to risk it, so no idea how I will keep this one clean. I used to wash the covers of the old one at least twice a year to stop them looking grubby.
