Washing Mop Head?

LittleWingSoul · 22/12/2017 10:31

In the spirit of reducing waste, I was just wondering if anyone has ever washed their detachable mop head in the washing machine? Apart from being a bit pongy it works fine.

It's one of those vileda microfiber ones if that makes any difference?

Ah - interesting post (sorry, that's how sad I am). Someone broke a bottle of red wine in my kitchen and use the mop to mop it up - mop head reeks, despite washing it out.

I was wondering if dishwasher might be better (if you have one) - it might bounce around too much if you put it in the washing machine - but I guess if it goes in with a general load, it will be OK.

The initial rinse of the mop head in hot water is the most important step, as this is the step which prevents mold and bacteria from taking root and starting to grow on the head of the mop. Once you rinse the mop head at least twice in clean water, decide whether you want to do a thorough cleaning with water and a small amount of bleach or utilize the washing machine. Either is acceptable for Vileda mops, as they are machine washable as long as the temperature of the water remains below 60 degrees Celsius. If you are unsure of the temperature settings of a particular wash, use a short, gentle wash setting on the machine to ensure that the temperature will not harm the mop head.

Once your mop head has been thoroughly cleaned, allow it to dry in a well-ventilated area. If the mop head does not completely dry at this stage, all of the cleaning process has been in vain; ensuring that the head is situated upside down and is left to dry in a space that has good ventilation will prevent the growth of any mildew or bacteria that may have survived the cleaning process.

I would.
I give the (square) mop pads a rinse & spin after use so they don't smell and fester in the corner.

madamginger · 22/12/2017 11:14

My vileda mop head goes in the wash once a month when I do a deep clean of the washing machine.
It come out fine

LittleWingSoul · 22/12/2017 13:35

Thanks for the responses! Not sad at all @Aridane ...I'm The one who posed the question!

Gonna try the washing machine with a load of towels and mop head - will let you know the results!

I don't have a vileda mop but an old fashioned dreadlock kind of mop. It goes on a quick wash once a week with all the microfibre cleaning cloths and a drop of Zoflora. I've had the mop head for about 3 years and it still looks good/doesn't smell.

bec3105 · 22/12/2017 14:35

I wash my mop head every week along with my cleaning cloths and tea towels. Add some zoflora instead of fabric conditioner.

Aridane · 24/12/2017 17:00

This thread has inspired me to wash my vileda mop head. But I cannot unscrew it

LittleWingSoul · 24/12/2017 17:27

Well I can vouch that it worked just fine! Mine unclips, @Aridane, rather than unscrews

Yes, I wash mine (same as your). Done it this week actually.

StealthPolarBear · 24/12/2017 21:29

Well this is a festive thread :o

BakerBear · 24/12/2017 21:31

You wash them?????

I just replace them when they are looking scruffy

Gunpowder · 24/12/2017 21:33

I wash mine once a week. >polishes housekeeping halo

treaclesoda · 24/12/2017 21:33

I always wash mop heads in the washing machine (until they are falling apart). I thought that was how they were designed to be used?

I hate disposable things, I try to avoid them.

LittleWingSoul · 24/12/2017 22:32

I'm with you @treaclesoda ... @bakerbear i am trying to cut down on unnecessary waste.

I wash mine once a week too #when I remember#. I just put it in the mashing machine along with my cleaning clothes, on a gentle cycle. It seems to be fine. Mine isn't Vileda but a mop with removable mop-head, from a market stall so not branded.

Kikisxmas · 28/12/2017 21:09

I've got a microfibre mop with a spare head, they go in the wash a couple of times a week. I don't understand how you can keep using a mop without washing it? Not being rude by the way just don't get how you would clean them if they don't go in the wash?

LittleWingSoul · 28/12/2017 22:34

@Kikisxmas well I suppose I would just change the head every now and then, it hadn't occurred to me to wash them!

We don't have pets so the floors don't get particularly filthy or anything, shoes off when we are in the house etc. Annoying white tiles in the kitchen so gets spot cleaned fairly often.

Blush Littlewing - cannot work out how to unclip the mop head. So have put a new mop head by the mop and hope my cleaner is better at mop heads than I am

Fizzyknickers · 29/12/2017 18:09

I do. I have 3, one in the wash, one on and 1 waiting (2 dogs and huge, tiled kitchen, plus wooden flooring all the way thru downstairs)

Zatsuma · 30/12/2017 08:32

I normally buy a new mop head every month Blush, I might start trying to wash them and use zoflora
(I go to pound shop, it probably doesn't cost much more than a weekly wash but it does sound wasteful)

Kikisxmas · 30/12/2017 19:51

Ah ok I have pets so floors get muddy each day so I only get one use per mop head.

LittleWingSoul · 30/12/2017 21:09

You mean you change it every time you clean the floor?! I would definitely recommend trying to wash it then - save yourself some money!
