How do you store kids clothes (which you need to keep for siblings)?

I have lots of clothes from my 2 yr old DS which I need to store in an orderly fashion until they are used by next child!
Anyone got any good ideas for how to divide these up and where to keep them?
We haved limited storage space in our bedrooms (Victorian house so no fitted cupboards).
At the mo they are divided up by size and kept labelled in nappy boxes, but this is not very pretty (sitting on floor in room for imminent new baby).
Any suggestions welcome! TIA

Under the bed in those plastic storage boxes

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 22:02

plastic storage boxes from aldi

i sort them out and give all the less loved and easily replacable stuff to charity and have boy boxes and gril boxes.

they're under our bed

Yes under bed is good idea (out of sight then), will check out available boxes...

If there is more than a year between the children I would box them up well and label them and put them in the attic. But there is then a slight danger of forgetting what is up there!

twentypence · 21/04/2007 08:17

I would store tops and pant in different boxes and store by season, ds was always in a different size top and bottoms.

I've got ours divided up by size and put in plastic bags then cardboard boxes and they're in order in the loft with the age written on the end for easy grabbing.

Pannacotta · 21/04/2007 11:04

MoosMa, you ARE organised! V impressive!

Mine were in plastic boxes in age sizes (box per group ie newborn/0-3 etc) then in the boxes have all the vests together/babygros/t-shirts etc so if we had had a boy could have pulled neutral stuff easily and sold other stuff but as it is its all in dd2 wardrobe now also boxes were kept in the loft

Another voice for space bags, i use them a lot and i think they are very good. Just label the age and keep it. One word of warning though. I don't know about yours but my second child is bigger then the first one so the clothes which my first child was wearing at 3 wouldn't fit now my second child. I've wasted some lovely outfits before I've realized that. Anyway, good luck with your storage solution.

Sort by size (eg 9-12m, or 2-3 years), also by type (tops/bottoms) and season.

Vacuum bag or clear storage bag from John Lewis, then into a large blanket box if you have one. Or buy some cheap storage items from Ikea or similar.

Pannacotta · 21/04/2007 20:38

Thanks all, will go shopping for some storage and get myself sorted!

most of my vacuum bags seem to have burst, so i wasn't hugely impressed...
i buy those tartan launderette bags for a quid each and store things in them. they're good, i reckon, cos they're quite squared so can be stacked up in the loft quite neatly.

Pannacotta · 21/04/2007 20:45

thats a thought, have got some of those bags too and you can fit in loads (and v cheap too)...

foxy1 · 22/04/2007 19:03

where do you get those bags from?? thank you

tassis · 22/04/2007 19:07

we're fortunate and have a HUGE cupboard in the eves...clothes are stored in plastic lidded boxes

dh thinks they should be in the loft, and if we ever get a pulldown ladder for the loft that'd be fine, but at the moment the loft's a pain to get to and I do think having the clothes to hand (amazing how many times I pull out something for friends LO who needs a change)

MrsWho · 22/04/2007 21:55

Space bags and boxes in the loft.

Pannacotta · 22/04/2007 21:56

Foxy1, I got the checked laundry bags from a market stall, though the large size costs £2 here not £1!

Bin bags in the loft! Bags numbered and an index of what is in each one kept downstairs.

clutteredup · 22/04/2007 22:06

Cardboard storage boxes from Ikea - cheap , easy to label and let the clothes breathe but you do have to keep them in a dry pest free cupboard or attic.

For baby clothes ( up to about 2yrs), they are sorted by size, in vaccum bags, on the top shelf of a wardrobe. But coats, hats, tights, socks and shoes are all in a big box, because they are much more seasonal and sizing is less accurate.

I've also got two big zip-up clothes bags of bigger-sized hand-me-downs from various friends. One is summery stuff and one is warm stuff. It's all just jumbled up together and every few months, DD1 and I have a good rake through and extract the things she likes. Then we have a lovely two days while she struts around in outlandish new outfits with too-long arms, and I quietly sort out the stuff that is actually going to make it into her permanent wardrobe!

I've also got a plastic crate on another shelf, where I sling outgrown clothes until I can be bothered to sort them out.
