Containers for food tech

What do your DC take food tech ingredients in?

DS has to take about 5 ingredients to school, all about 50/100g each.

I’ve sent him in with it all in separate sandwich bags but it feels a waste and he looks like a drug dealer.

This thread is quite old now, so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but we’ve very recently refreshed our best food storage containers page with plenty of portable options that have been tried, tested and loved by Mumsnetters. We hope you find it useful.

Sometimes they would take the plastic tubs with lids that our chinese takeaways come in (you can buy them in piles of 10 from poundstretcher type shops if you don't have takeaways). Can just come home with them and wash and used again. they stack and ingredients don't get crushed on the journey to school.
Sometimes they would take the bag (or flour, sugar, whatever) and weigh out the precise amount at school. Obviously if this is if there isn't too much in the bag or they hadn't left enough time to weigh them out and needed to leave for school.

My dd uses different size plastic pots for ingredients and I have Pyrex glass ovenproof dishes that have plastic lids. So she can make whatever dish at school and bring it home covered

I find the takeaway containers to flimsy and leak. Plus it’s less wasteful with the washable/reuseable pots.

We use the ones with click clack type sides

Easy to carry and won't spill

Great - will see what I can find. Ideally something cheap enough that I won't cry if he loses it!

Lock and Lock containers would be great for this. I use them for small items such as cherry tomatoes to eat with my sandwich etc. They come in a whole host of sizes and they are leak proof.

Our school actually just asks for a £20 donation for tech items at the beginning of year 7 and then never again. School provides all the necessary cooking items which means Ds2 goes to school with an empty lock and lock and brings it home with food in Grin I think more schools should do it.
