Hello, yes its me and I have a numpty question regarding hanging washing on a line

which at my grand old age of humpty-dumpty two I've barely done before .. always used tumble dryer or airer

but I have a new retractable washing line so have been gaily hanging up washing and feeling all 50's suburban housey-wifey too

but what's gone wrong? I have crispy clothes .. not sun-dried piles of freshness

I'm trying to teach dh to love crunchy line dried towels - but it's not going well.

Imawurzel · 16/04/2007 19:31

I don't have luxuries like a tumble drier
All our stuff goes on airers in the spare room. and on radiators, or if a lovely sunny day on our whirly gig thingy.
I don't use conditioner on my towels/flannels.
On everything else yes.
I like seeing a line full of washing (am i odd??)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/04/2007 19:32

i shake mine before i put them on then before i fold them. a quick firm flick like shaking sand from a towel and mine are fine.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/04/2007 19:33

i love washing out too wurzel, especially whites and my line bending with cloth nappies too!

Mum2FunkyDude · 16/04/2007 19:34

If there is no wind it tends to go stiff, give it shake before you fold it. Alternatively you can put it in the tumble dryer for a few minutes.

ProfYaffle · 16/04/2007 19:34

My line dried stuff isn't crunchy but I use minimal soap (gave up eco balls after all our clothes turned grey) and no softener, just white vinegar.

I'm coverting a tumble drier for winter emergencies though.

My washing is crispy if dried on a hot, sunny day. Best when you have a warm wind, dries fast and stays soft. Wind is the answer, defeat the object of saving power by not using the tumble dryer and invest in a big wind machine.

CorrieDale · 16/04/2007 19:37

Me too, LOTF. Unless DH has hung out the clothes, when I spend my time resisting the urge to re-hang them. I know - I really really need to get a life.

MegaLegs · 16/04/2007 19:38

Misread LadyofFlowers - thought she gave hers a quick firm lick.

i re-peg.....

NannyL · 16/04/2007 19:41

agh! is wind the key?

probably why mine stay soft cause it is ALWAYS windy when my clothes are up high on the line. *they get up very high )

one actually quite windy day the line broke (it was only 2 months old at the time, not an old line) and half my clothes ended up up my gutter and filty , and the other half ended up in next doors garden

now i refuse to hang out my washing when the day is offically 'windy'!

CorrieDale · 16/04/2007 19:41

Well thank God it isn't just me! I know I should be grateful that there's one less job for me to do - I really should. But sometimes he only uses one peg to hang up trousers

Imawurzel · 16/04/2007 19:42

DH put some washing out the other day, i waited til he was sat in front of x-box and re-did it all
It has to be done my way.
Is that territorial like??

Katy44 · 16/04/2007 19:51

Am I the only person who likes crunchy towels? When they're soft they're not very absorbant!

Nightynight · 16/04/2007 20:39

I like them too.

Janh · 16/04/2007 20:40

Oh good grief, you just lob them in the dryer for about 5 minutes to get rid of the crisp bits!

It'll churn out a bit of CO2 but you're worth it.

Katy44 · 16/04/2007 20:41

Maybe we should form an underground club - is it something we should be admitting to in public?

Nightynight · 16/04/2007 20:43
Grin
MuminBrum · 16/04/2007 20:44

I like crunchy towels as well - you get a jolly good exfoliate when you dry!
DT, I'm intrigued, how does line-dried washing help your immunity?

Janh · 16/04/2007 20:44

NB my comment was for clothes, not towels - I am another weirdo who likes them crunchy

NannyL · 16/04/2007 20:55

i have googled everything i could think about for air dryed / washing line dried clothes and increased immunity and found excatly nothing on it!

I would be interested to know if there has been research done on it (that i have missed) to show that hanging washing outside increases your immunity though!

maybe a link could be an unvented dryer increases moisture levels and thus moisture in your house... but this would surely be counterbalanced by people with no dryers who dry their clothes on radiators in the house?

MuminBrum · 16/04/2007 22:00

Bump for DT!

fridayschild · 17/04/2007 08:55

try the laundry outside today, not so hot, bet it won't get crunchy

though I have to come out as a member of the scratchy towel loving club
