Cordless stick vacuum cleaner recommendations, Dyson or Gtech?

I'm wanting to ditch our heavy plug in vacuum cleaner for a versatile cordless stick model to do hard floors, carpet, sofas and car. Most say the charge lasts for 20 minutes. Is this really long enough? Does anyone have one that lasts longer? I really want a Dyson v7 Total Clean but can't justify the price. Does anyone have experience of the Dyson v6 Total Clean or the Gtech Power Floor? Are they any good?

I am a cleaner and use both!! Pet owner?

I prefer the dyson and I can do a small three bed house and it still has charge.

Gtech were dreadful for me am afraid - what about a Shark?

Dyson definitely. We had a G-Tech and broke it twice just be running over a phone cable.

Now have a Dyson V8 and that takes on anything!!!

I have the Dyson V6 Total Clean. If you want one check out the Dyson website. Prices same as retail stores and often free accessories.

Must say that I havent yet used the fluffy head. The other head has been just fine on the laminate floors and carpet. And the run time is usually enough for me.

That's interesting. I just read a review where someone said the fluffy head wasn't necessary. I could perhaps save some money and get the Dyson Animal if it will do the job. Will research that model now.

Have owned both cordless Gtech and Dyson. Gtech good but not as good & when took it in for a service bloke said they were a nightmare to do/repair.

The Shark one is amazing, I find it better than the Dyson V6 which I had before.

We have a shark corded one, upright converts to cylinder. It’s amazing.

I have a shark lift away corded and roomba robot for daily clean ups. I completely agree gtech break v quickly, dreadful noise, don't pick up and customer service trying to get refund when it all goes wrong - woeful.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I have decided to go for the Dyson Animal v8. Only £50 more than the v7. I think it should be fine on hard floors from what I've read and has good attachments for sofas and car. Still a lot for a vacuum cleaner but am very excited to hopefully have something versatile and easy to use.

I have a Dyson v7 and it's worth the price. V8 is a little bit more than V7 but that's still a good decision.

Try a Shark - catalogue return, brand new lift away for £100 on eBay - far superior to a Dyson and much easier on stairs, car etc.

Just an update I now have the Dyson v8 animal and it is brilliant. Well worth the money. My carpets have never looked so clean. It's quiet, light, really easy to empty, and you can simply change the head and dust with it too. The charge lasts for ages too. I absolutely love using it and now do a quick vacuum round most days. Highly recommend.

RedKcat, I would be interested to hear how it lasts long-term (if you can bother to come back and update this thread in a year!). I found all of the 5 Dysons I had were amazing for the first six months but none of them lasted more than 2 years which I didn't think was good value for money. I do have two very hairy dogs though so I think I ask more of my vacuum cleaners than most people!

Good point. We have a v6 which is about 2 years old and just about dead. It seems to clog up really easily (although 2 years of hoovering dog and cat fur may explain this). It lasts about 5 minutes before it starts pulsing on and off.
Maybe that's how long cleaners last these days, just a shame.

We have a Dyson V6 that appeared to be terminally ill. To be fair, it's used by the family rather than me, and it hadn't been looked after.

I took it apart and cleaned every part thoroughly. Yuk. Still cut out after a couple of minutes. Phoned Dyson and they identified it needing a new battery - wasn't sure if it was the battery or charger that was faulty.

Got new battery from Amazon for £35 and it's now as good as new.

Thanks @cynderella I'll give them a call, I'd rather not throw it away unless it's properly dead...
