How do you stop them smelling awful?? Bleach? Change them every day? Am I missing a trick?

Microwave for 2 minutes. Wash frequently

Tiddlywinks63 · 19/10/2017 08:34

Mine goes in the dishwasher every day, if particularly grubby it get soaked in bleach and boiling water too.
I hang it up on a hook to dry and never leave it in the sink.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2017 08:36

I do think sponges are worse than cloths, though, because sponges never seem to get totally dry in the middle, whereas cloths can dry out if you give them enough space. But generally, disposable or changing regularly plus a VERY hot wash is best practice.

treaclesoda · 19/10/2017 08:40

I have about a dozen cloths and I just change them regularly, sometimes twice in a day if I have used it a lot that day, and throw in the wash basket. Then they go in a hot wash when the time comes.

I soak our micro fibre cloths in very hot ( almost boiling) water in a bowl with bicarb and white vinegar (it froths up very nicely!) for a day or so, then shove in my next hot wash. Oh and dry outside if poss.

donajimena · 19/10/2017 13:47

I use them dry. Spray surface and then wipe with dry cloth. Then air it and bung in wash. I don't know why people wet them.

LoniceraJaponica · 19/10/2017 13:52

“but they still stink by the time they get washed and still come out smelly!”

They must be washed at 60 degrees in bio powder. Non bio doesn’t kill the mould in washing machines, and if you are using laundry liquid ditch it. It is bad for washing machines.

“Just get rid they are pennies”

To go into landfill? Hmm

“Rinse out and microwave them. that's what my sister who's a health inspector does”

That’s what I do. 2 minutes in the microwave kills all the bacteria. They must be wet when you put it in though – don’t want to start a fire.

donajimena A bit tricky if you don't have a dishwasher. My MF's get wet a lot! They bring up glasses beautifully

LoniceraJaponica · 19/10/2017 15:00

Donajimena don't you do much cooking then? Does no-one ever make much mess?

Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 19/10/2017 15:03

Bit of boiling water in sink either bleach or zoflora and leave over night. Rinse wring and into washing machine on a normal wash.

donajimena · 19/10/2017 16:06

I've got loads of microfiber cloths. Use them dry (having sprayed surfaces with a cleaning spray) then they get shaken aired and popped in the washing basket. Hope that clears up any misunderstanding.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 16:33

Oh so you use them for surfaces only. I I use them for everything including the washing up.

SpinnerDryer · 19/10/2017 17:29

J Cloths are washable, not really disposable.

NameChanger22 · 19/10/2017 17:32

I've had the same microfiber dishcloth for about 5 years now, still going strong and never smelly. I soak it in bleach and hot water about once a month. I always squeeze it out and hang it over the side of the washing up bowl after use.

pleasingone · 19/10/2017 17:34

I soak mine in Milton overnight.

user1483390742 · 19/10/2017 17:36

Soak in milton overnight in the kitchen sink. Makes the sink lovely and shiny too! Smile
