Anyone have a wooden front door and PVC windows?

I know, but...

We have normal PVC windows and was out looking at front doors, and I really liked a wooden one. It's just pretty standard, neither traditional or farmhousey, just normal. The PVC ones I have seen are horrid, only one comes close and even then it looks yuk. Does anyone have one? It is going to be next to some lovely PVC cladding type stuff aswell (well, it is about 2 meters away). Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks xXx

I know - these blimming windows cost an arm and a leg!! But they look the part, and save me stripping and painting the wooden ones every few years...

that's why i think i would go for pvc - just out of pure laziness. and i think they are meant to be more secure and less draughty?

pvc doors aren't that yuk. ours is really secure, doesn't need continually painting and filling and is good at keeping noise/weather out.

Oh, more posts! We are going for the wooden one, was looking at PVC ones and unless you get a really expensive one, they tend to look abit awful. For the person who asked about costs, Anglian etc. charge about £800 odd, some place linked with B & Q (nice doors though) were £600 +, but we are getting a whole set (frame, door etc.) from Wickes for £399 and fitted for about £70-£100.

We have a 70s house with PvC windows and doors. The door doesn't half keep out the drafts and noise and is in keeping with the style of the house and the other houses on the street. Can't say that it's particularly hideous - pretty much white and door-like really.

We were looking for a nice door to replace our wooden one as we were getting the windows done anyway.GAve up as thought they were all gopping.Painted the door white instead.

luciemule · 12/04/2007 21:36

Security-wise - pvc more secure and cannot be kicked in as a wood one could be.
Looks-wise - wood wins hands down for me though.

We had aluminium doors and windows in our victorian house when we moved in....now replaced with UPVC which is a huge improvement. We don't really like the pvc doors so opted for one that looks like painted wood instead - they are very convincing and much more secure than wooden doors. They are called composite doors - I found some pics here (still can't get links to work sorry):

I have put a picture of my beloved pvc door on my profile to prove its not hideous

brimfull · 12/04/2007 22:43

that is a really nice door washersaurus. We wanted one like that, composite was the name I was trying to remember.Very expensive though,it was cheaper for us to paint ours

Washersaurus · 12/04/2007 22:47

I think it cost £1000 with the frame and fanlight window above and fittings etc, but after 4 years of putting up with the ancient glazed aluminium door (blurgh) it was worth every penny. It really made our house blend back in with all the others with their original doors.

Washersaurus · 12/04/2007 22:48

Believe me if we had had a wooden door we would have painted it !

Bouquetsofdynomite · 13/06/2007 11:04

Ooh that is nice Washersaurus! Looks just like my original 100yr old one which I need to replace. I came on here to do research about new doors and you've given me the answer, cheers!

BTW I think the dark brown PVC windows look all right on the kind of 80s estate houses in brown brick. They always look kind of warm and inviting to me.
