Anyone have a pax wardrobe from Ikea?

Just moved house and am off to IKEA this weekend to order a pax wardrobe as I like the fact you can design it to suit your needs. I am however not great at this sort of thing and wondered if anyone who has one had any tips? It could end up costing a fair bit so I want to get it right.
Should I work out what I need before I go or do the staff there help you with designing it?

My DH seems to think you can have a delivery & build service, not sure if this is correct. We are going tomorrow minus children so am just going to get it done. Hopefully will find helpful staff!

Yes you can do a delivery and build service. The build is done by a 3rd party company - assembly angels or something like that. We did this for the two largest wardrobes inbred of our bedrooms. DH built the smallest water

Sorry posted to soon. DH built smallest wardrobe we have and he and my brother built the second smallest. The really large ones were well worth paying to have built. They did it so quickly and have secured the wardrobes to the wall. We visited Ikea a couple of times to see all component parts, to see what we like and design the configuration both in the store and at home. Best of luck with it. Overall price was really good.

We've got two double and one single Pax and love them. We did the design in store in Southampton and the assistant was really helpful.

DH has built a sort of frame around them to make them look more, built in' if that makes sense?

We got one three years ago and it is still immaculate. We got a double and a single option. The double has two hanging rails and a shelf at the top (we have high ceilings). The single has a shelf at the top, a hanging rail and then three wire basket drawers. The centre door is a mirror.

Definitely, definitely use the planner in advance.

We have a pax wardrobe that is around 14 years old and has survived 2 house moves, another (huge, 3m wide) sliding door one that has done one house move and have recently purchased another 1.5 m wide one for Dd. They hold SO MUCH STUFF! When I eventually get around to Ds1's room, he'll no doubt get one too. Definitely plan using the online tool. We're lucky (?) enough to leave very close to an ikea, so were able to nip back for additional shelves etc as and when. The older two wardrobes have been reconfigured several times with new fittings to meet changing needs. I love how adaptable they are.

We do. Are going strong 10 years later, sliding and regular. They are in the kids rooms and gave been opened and closed a million times and are faultless. Better than the one we had made to measure where the hinges keep dropping.

My tip would be to pay to have it assembled. They did a fab and quick job. Wasn't that dear either. I recommend.

My other tip would be to take your time planning the inside once you have the wardrobe up, if you can. Having said that we rearranged it iver the years to suit different needs if growing family.

We’ve put a double pax wardrobe in each child’s room. My husband put them together. He needed help with the sliding doors as they’re really heavy.

I’ve had pax wardrobes before and for the price compared to fitted wardrobes, I’d recommend them.

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 06/10/2017 10:35

Loved ours - we didn't buy doors which halved the price and they work really well open.

Mercedes519 · 06/10/2017 10:36

We have them - the extra height ones. Do measure the height as if you put a hanging rail at the top you might not be able to reach it! I have a shelf above the hanging rail with wedding hats and stuff I don't need every day on it.

You can get a nifty extra hanging rail so I have half of mine as long hang and the other half with two rails to give space for tops etc.

We put a run of four double ones in our hall this year and they’re fab. We use them for general storage and coats/shoes etc. We went into store to look at what we wanted in the flesh and then ordered online using the planner. It’s useful to use the planner ime as you only end up ordering what will fit the carcasses you’ve picked. It’s too easy to pick up the wrong size in store.

We found them pretty easy to assemble, particularly after watching an online tutorial and had the whole lot up in half a day, including fixing to the walls, installing all the interior gubbins, and hanging the doors. The first one, of course, took probably half the time we spent in total on all four!

The thing I really like about them, and swayed me over getting something built in, is that you can change the interior fittings to suit your needs as they change. We currently have hanging rails, pull out baskets and lots and lots of shelves. If we want more shelves it’s just a few pounds and moving some pegs, it’s not having to disassemble stuff that’s fixed.

AveEldon · 06/10/2017 10:55

The only issue we had was the drawers & door hinges not being compatible - the planner didn't make that clear

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 06/10/2017 11:35

One word of warning if you get a corner one, the area behind the corner is not filled in. So when you put a camping bag containing all your childhood memories on top one and your idiot husband chucks more stuff up there, it will disappear never to be seen again Hmm

WatchingFromTheWings · 06/10/2017 11:52

DD has one and its massive! Had the extra tall one. It’s a double with sliding doors. Similar set up to pic above with 3 basket drawers in bottom (in one half of wardrobe) for shoes. Both sides have a hanging rail with a shelf above for storage. Moved it twice and still going strong! The runners are a bitch to put on if the 2 halves are not dead straight though!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/10/2017 17:16

DS has two doubles and a single in his room. We used the online planner to decide in carcasses and internals and then took him to the store to choose the doors and handles.

We had them delivered as they are the really tall ones and it took us an afternoon to build them.

We put them in several years ago and they still look like new despite a fair bit of abuse.

Pastwordprotected · 08/10/2017 17:39

We’ve used them successfully in our kids’ playroom for toy etc storage and have just put up another for clothes. Top tip from me: keep a copy of your design for when you come to build it - we couldn’t access the planner afterwards!
