Any recommendations (or otherwise) gratefully received.
We'd like the ice option, fridge side bigger than freezer.
Maybe black Hmm or silver I think.

TIA

We've got a stainless steel Samsung one that's going in today.

In our old house we had a white Samsung one. It was great, except that the filter was external and you had to pull the fridge out to change the bloody thing (which didn't proved easy fit several reasons). Not fun every 6 months. The new one we've bought has a far more easily accessible filter. So you might want to think about where the filter is and the logistics of changing it. It does vary a lot even within the same brand.

Thanks for the heads up about the filters.
How is your new one looking? Smile

We recently bought an LG one from Currys.

I wanted water/ice, but we don't have the plumbing for it. This fridge has a tank where you put in water and it feeds the ice maker. Works perfectly. It says to use filtered water, so I bought a Brita jug.

I like the shape of the drawers in the fridge, and the door shelves are double deep, so all the condiment bottles are easily stored and easy to find.

LapdanceShoeshine · 30/09/2017 15:49

I have an old LG one, but without the ice/water thing (as it takes up so much space in the freezer, which is much smaller than the fridge in the first place)

It's 8 years old & still works fine, but I've had to replace one of the fridge door shelves (they're very deep as Fffion says & hold a lot), & the glass shelf with the rollers for the veg drawer lost its frame/rollers ages ago, but that was due to me overstuffing it. (I would replace that too but can't find one on the spare parts websites.)

And the control panel pads don't respond any more so both freezer & fridge are stuck on 3/5.

I'm really selling it here, aren't I? Grin But honestly it's been great, the frost-free thing works perfectly, & even gets rid of the excess ice build-up when some fool hasn't shut the door properly; the depth of the door sides keeps most of the frozenness inside, luckily. It beeps when it's wide open, but not when it's just slightly open & the light is off.

I have a black Beko one, no ice dispenser though, love it.

agedknees · 30/09/2017 16:42

Black Samsung with ice and water. Lov, love, love it.

haggisaggis · 30/09/2017 16:51

Silver Samsung with ice, water & sparking water. Has large fridge with French drawers, 1 freezer drawer (but it’s a good size) and a separate fridge drawer you can adjust the temp for which is really useful for drinks. We’ve had it about 9 months and I love it.

mckenzie · 30/09/2017 21:45

thanks very much ladies.
personally, I don't like cold water and think tap water is just fine but the DCs are pushing for it.
can I get one with just ice I wonder and save the space?

My new one is still looking very much like it's still in the box. Through no fault if it's own. I'm not delighted about this. We aren't going to have a fridge until Wednesday now.

llangennith · 30/09/2017 21:57

It's the ice maker that takes up the space in the freezer.
I replaced my American style fridge freezer with separate side by side matching larder fridge and freezer.
I have a small kitchen but well worth the space they take up.

JaneEyre70 · 30/09/2017 22:05

Our first one was a proper American one (Maytag) and was amazing quality. It lasted well over 10 years and I nearly cried when it died. Since they'd become a lot more popular, we went for a much cheaper Samsung one, and tbh it's shit in comparison. It looks good, ice and water is great but the fittings are all very cheap plastic and we've got a broken cheese and veg draw and two broken door shelves within 2 years and it seems to leak from underneath constantly. The filters need changing every 3 months not 6, and it's got the most irritating fecking BING BING BING BING BING every time you dare browse in it for more than 10 seconds, let alone load it when the shopping comes......!! I've actually had to switch it off to put the Christmas shop away it's that bad. I'm going to research our next one a lot better when this thing dies....she says hopefully Grin.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/09/2017 22:09

We just bought an LG one with the no plumbing ice and water dispenser. It's fabulous.

The fridge is huge and amazing, freezer space is not enormous but fine for us as we have a chest freezer in the garage.

We do like the water dispenser, we always had jugs of chilled water in the fridge and it works well for us. Didn't want the hassle of having to get a plumber in though.

LapdanceShoeshine · 30/09/2017 22:31

The non-ice-maker LG does come with an internal ice-cube-maker, that fits in one of the freezer drawers, which we never used so I can't comment either way. But I would always go for the extra freezer space instead, plus a water container in the fridge (the door shelves are so huge they would easily accommodate several litres of water).

mckenzie · 01/10/2017 07:52

Thank you for all the comments. I need to do some more homework.

Arbitraryname, I hope by Wednesday you and your new fridge have started to build a great and long lasting relationship, sans box!

We have a Whirlpool one, 4 years old now. Ice and water dispenser. The children have never drank so much water and the novelty has not worn off.

It is plumbed in. Go and see them in real life to see the size of the freezer. We only cope with it because I have a separate larder freezer in the pantry. I batch cook and we shop at Costco so we get 10 chicken breasts at a time etc.

Personally I wanted a larder fridge and a larder freezer in the kitchen but Dh wanted the ice maker and it is used every day. So sometimes the fridge is completely full. It is like real life tetris at Christmas and when we have people over.

WindowsSmindows · 01/10/2017 10:14

Please tell me more about those models that dispense sparkling water? It's all we drink in this house and if I thought I could combine it with our new American style fridge freezer I would be delighted. I'm hoping to buy in the Jan sales so I have time to track down the right model.

blodynmawr · 01/10/2017 11:36

We've had a Samsung silver one for about 18 months. It was one of the Which? Best buys at the time. Had to re-jig kitchen cupboards to accommodate it and although at the end of a cupboard run the additional depth makes it obviously 'stick out'. (My kitchen is almost at the end of its life though so any refit will accommodate it better in the overall design).
Love having the ice maker for weekend G&Ts. Also like the cold water function as is actually nicer tasting than tap water....
The filter is in the top RHS of the fridge so easy to change.
The ice maker takes up space in the freezer door but the overall freezer volume is still slightly bigger than the old built in fridge freezer it replaced. We are a family of four doing a weekly shop and minimal batch cooking so don't need too much freezer space. If you like to buy a lot of frozen food and/or do a lot of batch cooking you are probably better off looking at either having a separate additional freezer, or the 'tall larder fridge next to a tall larder freezer' type option, which would have the additional bonus of not 'sticking out' of the cupboard run.
HTH Smile

ArbitraryName · 01/10/2017 12:35

We looked at the larder fridge and larder freezer option but the only version with plumbed in water (which we love and used all the time in our old fridge, then really missed when we moved and left the fridge behind) was incredibly expensive. Seimens do one for about £3k.

So we're sticking with the slightly smaller freezer. TBH, we need the big fridge far more.

ChinUpChestOut · 03/10/2017 13:01

I had an LG American fridge freezer, and it died age 9, just 2 months ago. I was devastated, as I loved the ice and chilled water features and used them constantly. In retrospect, the freezer wasn't actually that big, and quite small drawers. Although the fridge seemed huge, it wasn't that well organised so for example, the shelves had a lot of height between them, but you would end up stacking things on top of each other.

I replaced it with a Samsung tall fridge freezer - 267 litres for the fridge, and 98 litres for the freezer. It is much better designed on the inside and I find I can fit in a lot more in the veg & meat drawers, and it has a clever little wine rack under one of the shelves. Much better use of space. I miss the chilled water and ice making machine, but I would have had to pay at least another £600 for that to be included - and I was no longer prepared to pay that when the interior wasn't that well thought out.

Helena17 · 04/10/2017 10:16

I'm also thinking of getting the LG one from Currys but I wonder if it's energy saving. Have heard good reviews about it but also with the Whirlpool brand too. I hope there would be good deals for these.
