Removing hydrogen peroxide stain from clothes?

badg3r · 28/09/2017 21:52

I sprayed a sentimental babygro with oxy action, hung it on the line for what was meant to be ten minutes and forgot about it till it had dried out and left a massive yellow stain. I have been alternating between vinegar and soaking in water for four days (!) and although it has shifted a lot it is still not all gone. Any tips/success stories?!

It’s not a stain. You’ve bleached the colour out of it.
If you really want to salvage the item I’d try dyeing the whole thing a new colour not hopeful though.

Bugger! Why has the yellow faded then with soaking? It is white and grey stripes and the grey now looks unaffected, it is just the white that is slightly yellow still.

You can't dye over bleach marks. I am afraid I know this from experience.

It's the wrong time of year really, but you could see whether sunlight works its magic. So leave it on the line again or on a sunny windowsill.

I was wondering about sunlight. I'll give it a shot. The internet told me to try Daz but that seems a bit counter intuitive given it was hydrogen peroxide that caused the problem in the first place! The stain is very faded now, I'm not sure you would really notice it if it was on now. I'm pretty sure bleach would sort it out, I did a patch test on the white bit, but that's going to strip out all the rest of the colour. So annoyed with myself!

Hydrogen Peroxide IS bleach!!

Don’t make it worse.

Some dyes are stronger than others, which is why not all colours are affected.

Red, for example, is a weaker dye, which is why red colours are more likely to run if washed with other colours.

First thanks for the advice. As you are all dying (geddit Wink) to know how things turned out... I soaked it for five days alternating between vinegar and water, then washed on a cold wash and hung it in the sun (again). In some lights if you squint really carefully you can just about make out where it was, but unless you go looking it seems to have completely gone. So I'm going to call it a success!
