Double quilt for son at uni...advice please

My son is off to uni next week and the list of "things" he needs or might need seems endless! It's the eldest so not been in this position before and would love some advice especially regarding bedding.
He needs a double quilt so do l buy a 13 tog? Are halls warm? Or a 10 tog one? Should l buy a cheap as chips one that can be binned after the first year or do l get a washable one .... will it actually get washed?
Will a bed protector be a good idea...not a waterproof one!!! Are the mattresses new?
Any recommendations for a quilt gladly received or any other advice?
Thanks xx an excited yet slightly worried Mum.... he is self catering...pot noodles a specialty 😉

Halls are hot so id go for lower tog. I'd buy a cheap one with nice ish covers. It won't get washed but the covers just about might!

dementedpixie · 20/09/2017 20:03

I find 10.5 Tog heavy enough and I'm in Scotland. My kids still have their 4.5togs on their beds. I buy mid priced from Argos normally

LIZS · 20/09/2017 20:04

Ds' hall was like an oven, the heating was on even in summer and he couldn't turn the radiator down. Good for drying washing though,

dementedpixie · 20/09/2017 20:04

And we all have mattress protectors on our beds plus pillow protectors

Artyfarty555 · 20/09/2017 20:05

Thanks for quick replies! He has a new Next quilt cover that he chose but will he need another one ?

Surely you just get all the cheapest stuff going? It's going to be used for 3 x 10 week terms for 3 years. You're overthinking it. Primark or Asda sell duvets. Go and get one.

Artyfarty555 · 20/09/2017 20:07

Pixie , do you think he'll have a mattress protector on his bed or should l buy one to take.?

Cheers Nat, l was thinking that just a cheap Asda one... he can always replace it himself if needs be.

I'd get a second set, towels too although ds second set of towels are still in plastic a yearlater. Ds hall supplied mattress cover, duvet and pillow but he took his own anyway.

Doilooklikeatourist · 20/09/2017 20:11

Take a new mattress protector
Cheap duvet 😄We got DD a cheap one from Asda ( £12 )
2 covers and pillow cases

He'll need a Dressing gown

Speaking from experience , DS has graduated and DD in 3rd year , halls are very warm , and noisy !

MyBrilliantDisguise · 20/09/2017 20:12

Is it a single bed? It's likely to be a bit uncomfortable so he could put a quilt (old one if you have one) under the bottom sheet to make it more comfortable.

BuzzKillington · 20/09/2017 20:12

I wouldn't buy a super warm one - but I would not get a really cheap one either.

Really cheap duvet covers (e.g. from Ikea) tend not to have fastenings at the bottom which is a massive pita. You can get really good quality ones from Dunelm for only £25 or so.

My other advice is to get the best mattress topper you can afford as the mattresses are likely to be in the uncomfortable side.

Spam88 · 20/09/2017 20:13

Just get a value/smart price duvet. I think they're 10.5 tog. Halls can be warm or cold...I had a radiator that barely worked and single glazing, my friend on the same floor had a functioning radiator and double glazing 🤷‍♀️ you're definitely overthinking it. No the mattress will probably not be new and no I wouldn't bother with a protector.

annandale · 20/09/2017 20:17

Bloody hell, ds has inherited my duvet cover from uni 30 years ago, they don't have to be thrown out!

Sweetnessishere · 20/09/2017 20:34

DC2 is just getting their stuff ready for Freshers week and will be taking the duvet from their bed at home as they like the thickness, and as it's a couple of years old I don't care if it comes home again.

DC1 had a cheap JL duvet as their bed was a double at home and single in halls.

They both have 2 sets of bedding so it can be changed especially if there is any accidents. The bedding only comes home for the summer if they are between residences.

DC1 recommends blankets for extra warmth, layering. She had a special blanket which was fir the inebriated, they would be wrapped in it whilst they slept off their indulgence and it was easy to wash if they were unwell. It was used loads in Yr1. Less in yr2 when they were living out.

I have two quilts we bought - the first one was a present for my 13th birthday and I am turning 50 neat year. And it was from Tesco. [I remember it well as quilts were called continental quilts and were the new big thing. I got a cover for it for my 14th birthday. I pined for one for months before I finally got one].

Better to get a lower tog one. He can wear pyjamas or get a quilt to go over the top if he is cold.

Artyfarty555 · 20/09/2017 20:54

Lostsouls got the quilt from Amazon. Just a few more bits to sort x

I got my sons 2 of everything. Sheets and duvet covers as eventually over the year they will need to be washed. In halls they usually supply a thin mattress protector, but I bought each a padded mattress protector as well. Amazingly upon recommendations I bought duvets from Primark and they were excellent quality. A clothes airer is essential and one of those little driers you can hang lots of undies and socks on. A laundry bag for dirty linen, a door stop and some extra hooks for hanging jackets etc in their room. I would also suggest slippers or flip flops as some of the carpets in the rooms can be really grimey.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/09/2017 21:05

I bought DS2's duvet from Primark. He's just going into his 3rd year with it. He brings it home in the Summer holidays to be washed. We got him a memory foam mattress topper because the mattresses in halls, and student lets, are dire.

When he went to uni we bought all his bedding and towels in the same colour so they can be washed on a hot wash together.

Artyfarty555 · 21/09/2017 14:49

Thanks fairy, his bedding and towels are all shades of black and dark grey for that very reason. Bought a mattress topper from primary today. He's adamant he doesn't need a dressing gown or more than one set of shorts and t shirt for bed. I'm hoping once he's in and settled he'll just buy anything extra he needs. He's never been to stay at other people's houses so hes not sure what he needs.
