It sounds like it might be a bit too much of both, but I use quite small amounts for my washing as I can't deal with strong smells.

Are you using a long enough wash? If you're using a super quick one then stuff might not be rinsed through properly.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 17/09/2017 16:15

I'd use half the amount of both next time.

I use about 100mls of powder for a full load and a cap of softener. I do have a 9kg machine though so for a smaller load I would use less

I use a small amount of powder much less than suggested, because most of the time clothes just aren't dirty.

Also I don't bother with fabric conditioner most of the time.

I have a 8kg one but its only me so never lots off washing in my towls feel like rocks so shall i use more fabric softner than powder like 80ml using the baby bottle as a guide and a full cap off softner or 100mil powder and the first line in the softner cap thank you

Fabric softener can make towels less absorbant so I wouldn't use too much (or use none). A build up of detergent can also make them hard so use less powder. If you're are only filling it half full then half your powder. The amounts given on the box are for full loads

starkid · 17/09/2017 17:10

I use half the suggested amount of powder, then because I'm in an area with hard water, I had some soda crystals in with the powder to make it act as a water softener, so don't have to use as much powder.
I was using the recommended powder amount for hard-water areas in my washing when I first moved out, and the clothes came out horrid!!

I find that supermarket own brand washing powder and fabric conditioner are not as strongly perfumed as the big brands. I use Aldo's own brand - I use half the powder the instructions say to use. We are in a very soft water area though.

Limer · 18/09/2017 07:52

Halve the amount of powder and don't bother with softener. Also, try a shorter cycle, 157mins is incredibly long.

Put vinegar in the machine's softener hole instead of softener OP it will soften the towels & is better for your machine.

EcoCleaner · 18/09/2017 12:10

Tommy2017, what's your water hardness like? We're in a soft water area and I use about 60ml of powder and 1/2 cap of softener for a full load.
Your washer may also be different to your mums, lots of modern washers only do 2 rinses instead of 3, especially on quick wash.

Top laundry tips from me:

  • wash clothes on 40, towels & bedding on 60
  • avoid using quick wash where possible
  • use the extra rinse button for heavier items and bed sheets to get more residue out
  • don't overload the machine. Make sure you can still get our hand in the top of the drum
  • stick to powder, not liquid
  • keep the door ajar when the washer isn't in use

Your washing machine might need cleaning: remove the dispenser drawer (where you put in the soap powder), clean it and around the opening; clean the rubber seal and clean out the filter - this will be at the bottom of the machine and you'll need a tray to catch the water that will drain out - pull out the filter and clean. Then run a service wash - 90 degrees on empty.
