Decorating a bedroom for both my ds and dd, what colour etc?

jofeb04 · 04/04/2007 21:47

My ds is 3, and my dd is 18months, and we need to decorate the bedroom for the two of them.

What colour and wall paper should we go for (already got painted walls etc, want a change).

Thanks

I would go for something neutral like mint green or pale yellow or maybe even cream?

yomellamoHelly · 04/04/2007 21:55

What about keeping the walls fairly neutral and using primary colour accessories to brighten it up.

Spidermama · 04/04/2007 21:56

I just done my boys' room. I've done two walls in a lavender blue colour and the other two in a more lilacy colour. They tone beautifully and it looks great.

Malaleche · 04/04/2007 21:57

orange, lime green and purple!

Circus theme is good fun - here's some wallpaper bit pricey but you could probably get some cheaper, do an animal theme with blues and greens and yellow/orange, nice and cheerful but not too bright.

When we decorated our ds's room we went for gender neutral because we didn't know whether we would be getting a boy or a girl. It was fortunate that we did because a girl that we were matched with wasn't placed with us at the last minute and then when ds came along we didn't have to redecorate.

Anyway, his room has 3 white walls and 1 sky blue wall. The current window blind is sky blue (originally peachy-beige/blue stripe) and all the accessories (light shade, blankets, bed linen, pictures) are peach or soft yellow. There is a sofa which is cream background with soft, water-colour-like blue and yellow iris pattern. The carpet is dark cream.

i LOVE that circus wallpaper!

i was going to suggest a spotty paper on just one wall - and pick up a pale blue or lilac colour from it to do other walls

Crazydazy · 04/04/2007 22:24

We decorated ours all in the same paper and then put a girly border half way around one side of the room where DD was having her bed and then put a scooby doo border in the other half where DS is, we also put pictures etc to make their half of the room look the way they want, it works quite well.

There are some lovely books on decorating babies' and children's rooms and family homes by Judith Wilson, published by Ryland, Peters and Small. They include ideas for combined boy/girl bedrooms. I bought the whole lot last year before imagining my daughter's and my stepsons' bedrooms and they definitely helped. Everyone is very pleased with the outcomes.

Pannacotta · 06/04/2007 11:30

I second Anna8888's suggestion, the Judith Wilson books are lovely and really inspiring. Have borrowed a few ideas myself...
I do think it is a good idea to keep the walls fairly neutral such as a cream/linen colour and add colourful accessories like mobiles/pics/toys/bed linen etc to make each part of the room specific to the child IYSWIM.

Does anyone else think we could do with a home/design style thread in Talk, seems there is no obvious place for these queries as some people post in Style and some here??

Anna8888 · 06/04/2007 12:10

Pannacotta - I think that's a fantastic idea, maybe we could post photographs of rooms we've done out that we think are successful and talk about where we found the furnishings?

cremeggafoam · 06/04/2007 12:17

i would love that too.A decorating thread would be fab.

i would go for a pale apple green.suitable for both girls and boys. you can get some funky wall stickers from vertbaudet for each of their corners.here

there is a gorgeous green and white duvet cover in ikea at the moment
here

Pannacotta · 06/04/2007 12:23

Wonder how we suggest that to the mumsnet HQ, anyone know?
I saw a post in Style this week saying the same thing so its obviously sth that a few people would like to see...
Would love to see pics of childrens' rooms other mumsnetters have done, lovely idea!

Anna8888 · 06/04/2007 12:24

[email protected]?

Pannacotta - it's your idea, so you go for it unless you'd rather I did?

Pannacotta · 06/04/2007 12:48

I'll do it and let you know how I get on.... thanks for the email details.

Pannacotta · 06/04/2007 13:04

Email sent and had a reply straight away. It will be discussed at the next mumsnet meeting. Perhaps if others also email it might help (strength in numbers etc).

Anna8888 · 06/04/2007 13:04

If you like, did you give them a link to this thread?

Pannacotta · 06/04/2007 13:20

No because I still cant make links work!!

Anna8888 · 06/04/2007 13:21

or just copy the thread title into an email? I can't do links either (must admit have never tried).

itshardworkbeingamum · 14/04/2007 21:13

Have a look at this I'm not arty at all, but did a huge mural for dcs' room. Looks fab, was really cheap, and totally fun to do. Also all my friends think I'm really clever.

itshardworkbeingamum · 14/04/2007 21:15

this would be good for a ds and dd
