How to remove double sided sellotape stickiness from coffee table?

abigboydidit · 13/09/2017 12:02

Our solid teak coffee table has had child protection bumpers on it for about 5 years as the corners are deadly. Have peeled it off today but not surprisingly, lots of sticky residue left behind. Any tips for how to remove it? Much appreciated.

Nail polish remover.. But test an inconspicuous area first..

Try WD40, or

baby oil, or

citrus/orange oil (often sold as sticky residue remover), or

Methylated spirits (check on underside of table in case the finish is shellac and dissolves)

Apply with old rag, leave soften and wipe off residue. You may need to repeat the procedure a few times.

Oh! That was would never have occurred to me - thanks. Will have a wee dab now.

Oh, may try oil option first. Thanks again.

First try using putting some fresh sellotape on the sticky areas and then removing it, this will often remove the tacky residue, you might have to do it repeatedly with more fresh sellotape until it has all been removed.
You can also buy 'Sticky stuff remover' which is solvent based, but try it on an inconspicuous area first as it might remove the vanish from the wood finish.

Baby oil didn't seem to do anything. Not sure we have any sellotape in the house so will try nail varnish just now.

Desolv-it prewash spray should also work as it removes stickers. I get it in the supermarket

KentishGypsyTart · 13/09/2017 12:14

Cooking oil

abigboydidit · 13/09/2017 13:27

Think I will need to buy stuff as nothing I have in is doing anything and I don't want to scrub too hard. Thanks for the advice.

Use an eraser and a bit of energy. As you rub, the rubber shavings will pick up the sticky glue residue. Try this before buying other products 😁

Prictoriafeckam · 13/09/2017 13:45

I find that either methylated spirit or paint brush cleaner (turpentine substitute) deals with nearly all sticky patches. Very occasionally water removes labels. Btw scary was suggesting nail polish remover not nail polish.

efeslight · 13/09/2017 13:48

Try mayonnaise, leave it to soak in for a while

PestoSwimissimos · 13/09/2017 13:48

Sticky Stuff Remover

justdontevenfuckingstart · 13/09/2017 13:49

HG sticky stuff remover, can probably get it on Amazon. Bingo we use it at work lots, dispose of the cloths you use tho as it is flammable.

KakunaRattata · 13/09/2017 13:50

Seriously, try WD40. I use it to remove sticky label residue and it works perfectly.

Rafflesway · 13/09/2017 17:04

Another vote for sticky stuff remover. Brilliant stuff!

surgical spirit is excellent (but again check it doesn't remove the varnish). Works well on greasy stains in the kitchen too.
