Does anyone have a bureau desk?

Just moved into a house with a large hallway & lovely wooden floor which needs something in it but I don't want it to be shoe racks & coats so have another cupboard for them.

I'm thinking I would like a small
desk so I can do quick bits of admin & bills etc.

I quite like the look of the old style desk bureaus with the pull down desk flap but am unsure how comfortable they would be to sit at.
Would be ideal for being able to hide all the stuff away when not in use and would look like a nice bit of furniture.

Does anyone have one and can tell me where they bought from and how they find it works for them?

Bumping as looking for similar

I don't have one (would love to though) but I see them all the time in charity shops.

I had one growing up in my bedroom. I was perfectly comfy and meant that I could hide away all the mess once I was done too!

I have an antique one although we don't actually use it as a desk.

It would be quite comfortable though. Height of the desk when open would be the key thing I'd think.

we have one and it's a bit of a pain. You can't have trailing cables; I can't shut my laptop inside, and somehow all the cubby holes are the wrong size. Permanently shut, and permanently chaotic inside!

I have one that we inherited from dh's Grandma.

It has all the space i need for general housekeeping letters, accounts etc and stuff gets filed in the drawers.

I got on great with dh's grandma (she only had grandsons so 'adopted' me as a granddaughter) and I love using her desk!

My dsis has one, it's varnished dark oak and she got it from ebay for £50 I'm dead jealous as it's absolutely beautiful. It did have a scratch but she put some of that black stuff on it, looks similar thing to violin rosin but rectangular, it did the trick and it stands in her hallway.

We have one and love it! I never sit for long at the desk bit - it's a bit on the high side for the nearest available chair - but perfectly fine for doing the odd bit of admin. Watch out for the strength of the flap mechanism too - most won't bear a lot of weight/ pressure when open. Ours has a nice leather pad inside the flap which makes it good for writing on. We keep pens, paper clips, sellotape etc in the top flap bit, and use the drawers for paperwork, phone chargers and wrapping paper/cards. Works brilliantly!

Ours was from a second hand furniture barn - lots cheaper than buying new and goes with the age of the house/ other furniture. The most common ones we saw were Edwardian or 1950s/60s repro.

Thanks for all the replies. I do think it could be just what I need. I need my own area, that's not the kitchen table & not getting mixed up with dd's art & craft creations!!

I would like to be abele to use a laptop not it and thought I could shove it in one of the drawers when not using.

I have no idea when it comes to interior design or creativity! Was thinking of a pale grey painted one, or cream, a bit shabby chic looking...Our house was built in the 60's and has some character ie wooden doors, fireplace etc but don't know what sort of style/era of bureau would suit the house.
Can anyone help on that front? Thanks

We have an oak bureau from M&S. Computer lives inside it, keeps my study tidy and I absolutely love it. Not sure what would suit your home but try m&s and Cotswold company

We had one and got rid of it as it just wasn't big enough or comfortable enough for regular use. For now and then bill wrangling one may be practical, but I'd not want to rely on one as a main desk.

I have an old one which belonged to my parents, it has one drawer and bookshelves underneath, lots of little cubby holes which can give hours of amusement when arranging things to fit.

I also have one that was bought from somewhere like John Lewis (not JL but somewhere similar) in the 80's. It is more sturdy, has pull out supports for the top to rest on when open and has drawers underneath. It is useful and practical. Laptop leads can go down the side when it is in use. I bought it with a captain's chair and still have that too, it is adjustable and swivels round so you can move easily and can also roll it back.

Try a charity furniture shop or antique market.

I would love a roll top desk, they are expensive and not easy to find.
