What can I use to get rid of limescale on chrome taps that won't mark or discolour the taps?

I've tried some limescale removers in the past that have ruined chrome fittings. Anyone know a brand that doesn't or maybe a natural alternative?

TIA

PanicPants · 03/04/2007 17:44

I've tried vinegar (saw it on how clean is your house),didn't do anything for my limescale.Saying that it was a bad case, ended up replacing the taps.

yes soak a j cloth or similar wrap and put a placcy back over it. securwith elasitc bank. i have 10 wek old onlap so c'ant type

ucm · 03/04/2007 17:48

if it's really lumpy yo u will have to sort of chiesl off some

3easterbunniesandnomore · 03/04/2007 17:48

It might need proper soaking..so depends qa bit on teh area where the limescale is, how possible that is....forinstance I had major limescale probs wiht the bottom of my taps..i.e. where the water comes out, and I soaked Kitchenpaper and put it around and put a plasticbag over and fixed it wiht a rubberband and left it for a few hours and it came nicely off....
Trick of the "How clean is your house" ladies, lol

this is from the how clean is your hosue website:
"To remove limescale, soak a paper towel in lemon juice, cover limescale with it for one hour before rinsing. Repeat as necessary. Do not use on thinly plated surfaces, such as gold taps."
Here they use lemon....

PanicPants · 03/04/2007 17:53

lol at chisel

No, they're not that bad! Will try the vinegar - thank you ladies.

yes another vote here for vinegar and kitchen paper and elastic bands - bit pongy for a while but it soon goes.

Vinegar soaked kitchen roll is good for wiping the outside of chrome kettles as well.

Thicker deposits may need a couple of goes but it won't damage the chrome.

ucm · 03/04/2007 18:09

PLastic bag over it, otherwise it dries out before the stuff in the vinegar has a chance to whack/punch the limescale. God, typing is so much easier without a colicky baby on ones lap.

PanicPants · 03/04/2007 20:20

Thanks all.

Hope the colic settles soon ucm. How old is your lo now?

Hi - I have just seen your message and reached for my trusty bottle of Hagesan Blue. It claims to be safe on chrome surfaces - I have used it on many items including chrome taps and it is fine.

I bought my bottle in a hardware shop - it was quite expensive if I remember rightly but I have had my bottle for a good couple of years and it is absolutely brilliant - I thoroughally recommend it to everyone!

Cheers

app if you cut a lemon in half and stick it on the end of the tap spout (presuming thats where the prob is) it gets rid of the limescale, keep meaning to try it....

I use limescale remover from a company called Natural Clean. It is environmentally friendly and doesn't have any odour plus it is the most effective limescale remover I have ever used! I use it on my chrome taps. You just pour a little bit on the tap and you will see the limescale fizz then you wipe off with a damp cloth. You can do your whole shower area by applying it to a damp (ecloth is best) cloth then wiping the area and leaving for a bit before rinsing. You can buy it online - the bottle goes a long way too. www.naturalclean.co.uk (sorry can't do links!)
