Steam iron or steam generator?

Hi' my iron is 14 yr old, and on the blink.... Leaks water a lot and broken bits of plastic off it.
I have to iron 10 school shirts every Sunday, and use it for occasional sewing projects too.
Good housekeeping seem to reccomend a generator for a family sized ironing pile (I certainly think 10 shirts is a lot, but maybe not!)
But not sure if it would be that helpful for sewing projects.... Ironing fiddly bits before sewing, not necessarily vast amount of ironing.
What do you think?
Any experiences appreciated.

I love my steam generator. And I hate ironing. I could never go back to an iron.
Great for heavy cotton things. Trousers (lie flat and iron. Job done!)
Shirts maybe not quite so much of a difference. But it is seriously quicker.

Quicker, you say?
Sounds good

Hugely. The back and forth sawing with an iron. Forget it. Steam generator. Once over. Job done.

Yes get one! My mum bought me one and I love it.

One tip I learnt is to steam iron in one direction then pull the iron back the same way without steam. The steam and heat will still be there to get thecteases out but you'll use less water. Not sure if that makes sense, but basically you don't need to hold down the steam button the whole time!

Modern steam irons don't need back and forth sawing either, we replaced ours last year and it irons like a dream, also it's considerably less bulky for storage and was cheaper.

Interesting... I don't have sawing motion with current iron, which was quite good when I bought it. Plus I'm only ironing shirts. Regular (Philips azur). I am concerned about storage space, so not sure steam generator is or me....

Anyone with ideas about if stream generator is good for sewing projects?
It might be a bit overkill to heat up, if I'm just wanting to iron some hems instead of tacking them first....

Steam generating iron is definitely faster. I respect of ironing sewing material just buy an iron, they are so cheap or may be a travel iron, that way you have a steam generator iron for household clothes and travel iron for travelling and your ironing projects.

I love my steam generator iron - I couldn't go back to a standard one. They are much quicker, hardly any effort is needed, and they heat up quickly too.

Go for it! You will never regret it!

I am crap at ironing! The best I ever got my clothes to look was 'not creased'. My iron broke and mil gave me a steam generator, it is amazing! My clothes actually look like they've been ironed now, twice as fast, I even iron my clothes now not just the uniforms Grin

I got my steam generator iron about 3 years ago and honestly it was the best investment ever.. when I first used it I literally ironed everything in sight. I had 4-5 duvets sets in the airing cupboard that had been there and unused on the bed for months (years?) because they were king or super king size and needed ironing to look decent. I ironed them all in one sitting. It's so so much quicker than using a normal iron. Worth finding storage space for imho. I hate ironing, but like my clothes and bedding to be ironed so it's a happy compromise.

Thanks for feedback everyone.
I went for it and got Philips fastcare steam generator which was on offer.

I do really like it, I'm not sure I will go as far as ironing the bedding! But I love the way you are not sloshing the water round with you, and you actually have much better control over when to use steam and when not, with the trigger.

I'm hoping to get faster, but I'm certainly enjoying ironing more! So nice it doesn't widdle all over the ironing board.

Thanks again for your encouragement
