What's a reasonable amount of wardrobe space?

Dh and I have about 12' of wardrobe to share (basically one wall of the bedroom). Mostly hanging, but inside the wardrobe we each have a 'tower' of 14" cubes stacked together to make a shelving unit, one of the cubes in each stack being split into a pair of drawers.

Would you consider that to be enough? How much do you have?

I have about 2 feet of space ,shared in my daughters wardrobe. Dh has the wardrobe in our room.
was trying to downsize anyway.

Dh has 2m worth of hanging space for his shirts and 4 1m long shelves for everything else. I have two drawers under the bed (each 1m x 1m). Dh never chucks out clothes though (unless I've shrunk them!).
Yours sounds massive.

ChasingRabbits · 02/04/2007 20:29

surely it's what you need to store what you have? what other people have is therefore irrelevant?

If it's not enough for all your stuff then you either need more storage or need to de-junk your stuff - do you use it all? (says me who has things I haven't worn for YEARS and definately will no longer fit into)

PrettyCandles · 05/04/2007 10:56

I definitely need to de-junk. I periodically throw away or give away clothes that haven't seen the light of day for a couple of years - I can rarely bring myself to get rid of things that are still familiar.

I actually want us to have less space () because I want to have free-standing wardrobes, rather than wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, as I think that will make our room seem bigger, but I don't know whether it would be practical. So far, it would seem that most of you have less wardrobe space than us!

12' is about 4m, isn't it? We have 3m of wardrobes and a chest of drawers so yours sounds fine. We find it's enough for clothes but not for eg ski kit, motorbike kit, outdoor coats etc whihc live elsewhere.

1m of full-length hanging and 1m shelves of folded things is mine, DH has 1m short hanging (ie shirt or folded trousers) with shelves beneath and the chest of drawers.

MrsBadger · 05/04/2007 11:05

oh, and freestanding wardrobes won't necessarily make the room seem that much bigger because the doors won't slide so it's harder to walk past when they're open.

You also lose the handy cupboard between the top of the wardrobe and the ceiling, meaning you inevitably pile stuff on top, which always looks awful.

foxinsocks · 05/04/2007 11:05

that sounds like a lot (but I guess, depends on how much you have!)

both dh and I shared a double free standing wardrobe - so I guess about 4 foot wide until we changed rooms with the kids and now we share a fitted wardrobe, I would guess about 8 foot wide.

Dh has to wear suits every day so they take up a lot of space.

We have fitted wardrobes down 1 wall of our bedroom. I would say 3 metres. Half of this is my hanging space, but it wasn't enough (I hang most things) so I have a hat stand type from Ikea (a shelf with a rail) half way down at one side which I use for hanging tops from, with blouses/jumpers above. Then we have a floor to ceiling rack or wire baskets - 12 in total - which we use for other clothes. Then the rest of the space is DHs but he has two rails at his side because his stuff are mainly short. Then we have each have underwear in our bottom two bedside drawers. This is not enough for two reasons, the first being we have nowhere else to keep our coats other than one or two on the hall stand, and the second being my bags and shoes. I have got round this by buying an underbed storage unit from Ikea.

foxinsocks · 05/04/2007 11:16

and I agree with MrsB's point - that bit between the hanging rails and the ceiling in the fitted wardrobes is crammed full of stuff - when we were in the free standing wardrobes, it all sat on top!

bozza · 05/04/2007 11:20

I agree too, only go for freestanding wardrobes if you wouldn't ram the top full with stuff. I think free standers look nicer but only if they are free or stuff on top, and definitely hold less stuff.

NannyL · 05/04/2007 21:26

i have 3 wardrobes

1 HUGE one for my tops
1 VERY BIG one for my trousers / skirts
1 normal sized double door one for my scarfs and PJs

and i still have my best dresses hanging on the back of the door

and loads of dressing gowns and stuff on loads of hooks on the back of my own bedroom door

i have anpther cupbaord with a hanging rail where i hang my handbags

and thats just for me!

I don't own a wardrobe! Just have 4 draws which don't have much in! I want enough clothes to fill a wardrobe.
