Dyeing polyester/viscose mix

I have a dress which I love the shape and fit of, but the colour doesn't suit me at all. I'd like to dye it, but am unsure because of the material. It's 63% polyester, 34% viscose viscose and 3% elastane. The material is plain, there is no pattern or other colours on the main part of the dress (it is also lined).

I've only used dye on cotton before. Dylon can be used on cotton and says it also works on viscose, but synthetics won't dye. Having searched on old threads before posting this I found a link to a polyester dye at The Dye Shop but that says it won't work on natural fibres (which I think viscose is). Does anyone have any ideas or advice? The dress at the moment is an acid yellowy green. I was thinking of trying to dye it navy, so if any of the lime green lining shows through it would still go. Dylon says that natural fabrics will take the full colour but synthetics won't dye as well. How would that work on a blended fabric?

There's an American brand of dye that will work on synthetics - can't remember the brand but you can easily find it online if you look for machine wash dye. Maybe worth getting some of that if it's a dress you really like?

If the dress fabric is a mix of natural and synthetic fibres then you'll get a paler result and if the mix is uneven then the result will be uneven too.

Viscose is a cellulosic fibre, like cotton, so dyes for cotton will work on viscose.

Polyester doesn't take up dye anywhere near as well and, as pp said, the result will be uneven and the dress unwearable.

You also need to consider the stitching and any zips, which will also take up dye differently.

Basically, don't do it - you'll ruin the dress. Sorry.

I have used two packets of idye in the same shade, one for synthetics and one for cottons for a cotton-mix dress. It turned out okay, but the stitching, for example, is a different colour to the main dress, and it is a little patchy. The whole process was quite a pain, though, and I'm not sure that I'd bother again. The thing is, it was a muslin that I had made to try the fit of a sewing pattern, but I liked it, just not the plain colour, so I dyed it, but on a good quality dress that you like, I would be wary that you might ruin it.

Ok, that's disappointing but thank you for the feedback. I just need to weigh up whether to risk potentially ruining it versus how much will I actually wear it as it is. Food for thought. Thank you
