Help please! Buggered up expensive baby mattress!

Hello, please can a wise Real Life Grown Up tell me what to do?

I washed a little wool baby mattress on a 60 - intending to be realllllyyyy clean.

Of course now the damn expensive thing is warped. It's all bulked and bent.
I've tried laying it out flat but I've clearly cooked the fibres.

Is there anything I can do to reverse the warping? What if I wet it in cool water and lay it flat?
Iron it?
Soak it?

Any suggestions are so welcome please! I'm due in the next few days and want to fix this flipping mattress for them before they come.

Nothing. It's done for. Bin it, use it for a dog bed, whatever. We all make mistakes so don't be hard on yourself, just let it go.

HopeChance · 01/09/2017 06:53

I don't think anything can be done. I've tried with many a shrunken jumper.

Footle · 01/09/2017 09:21

You've felted it. Can't be unfelted.

NoSquirrels · 01/09/2017 09:30

Sorry OP. Hot wash & wool = felt

Resolve never to do it again, that's the only advice possible really. Everyone has some of these "oh shit" moments!

Oh, arse. Seems like a pretty unanimous decision here :/

Well thank you all for your help!

I've heard socking in fabric conditioner then stretching can help

imjessie · 01/09/2017 10:55

You can soak it in cold water with softener but it won't stop it being felted. It will relax it a bit if you re shape when wet . You can't make it any worse so worth a go . Dry on the line when wet and let the water pull the weight of it down. ( I'm an ex dry cleaner and have fixed lots or stuff over the years )

I've also read baby shampoo or conditioner for relaxing fibres but didn't actually try it myself. I crocheted a massive blanket for DC2, cost loads in yarn and was a proper labour of love throughout my pregnancy. You can probably imagine what happened the first time I washed my masterpiece.

Tbh OP if you're a few days off I wouldn't waste that time messing around with it, just order a new one!

Oh amazing! Thank you all!

Right, I'll give that soaking in fabric conditioner and hanging a go while it's nice weather to hang it out. Like you say, can't make it any worse :/

Thank you!!!!
