Talk to me about IKEA Trofast

I need toy storage, I tried the Kallax but it just doesn't work.

I'm so confused by the Trofast though, why are some deeper than others? Do all boxes fit all Trofast?
Ideally I want the tallest and widest, so it would be the white option.
The tall one is 30cm deep so next to the step one (44cm deep) would it look odd?

The boxes fit all the options but go in long side first in the 30cm options and short side first in the 45cm options (if that makes sense).

So the 45cm ones have narrower but deeper slots, 39cm are wider but shallower.

sleepyhead · 31/08/2017 15:06

I think they'd look fine together btw.

MrEBear · 31/08/2017 15:41

What are you trying to store?

I have the low 3 wide unit and 2 of the tall ones. My 3 wide has 3, medium boxes and 3 shallow ones, 1 tall one has 3 medium boxes and the other has 2 shelves.

Salva · 31/08/2017 19:47

Thanks sleepyhead, that makes a lot more sense. I might actually be better with the deeper versions then.
Mr I've got the IKEA kitchen(and way to many accessories), a small amount of car/trucks/tools, dolls, dolls stuff, crayons/pencils, gazillions of coloring and sticker books, pretend phones/tablets, happyland. Random small stuff like mr&mrs potato head, torches, dressing up accessories (I have a rail for the dresses/outfits), a selection of toy hairdryers/brushes/perfume/lipstick. It all gets lost in the big kallax boxes. I've got pretty much all the wooden IKEA toys too., train set, pull along blocks, bead wire thing, lighthouse stacker. And 3 baskets of soft toys.
Sorry was easier to try and list everything (and realize I need yet another clear out) I know there's more stuff than that.

I did have the boxes neatly organised but my children have no appreciation for this

Salva · 31/08/2017 20:39

Oh I love a real photo, thank you. The tall ones looks like they hold loads, is that the boxes in sideways?
My entire house is IKEA Blush

I think trofast is fine in a playroom and at a push in a kid's bedroom, but is it not just way too ugly for adult space?

A couple of these maybe?

Salva · 01/09/2017 00:30

It is for a playroom, I've never considered Trofast before as it's so ugly. But needs must!

We also have a kallax laid longways on the opposite wall. It is a good height to be used as a play surface that way. Also I have sprayed the wicker baskets a lovely colour. It is much more visually appealing. When kids were smaller I left baskets off the top row and just displayed books and pretty toys. Again my children do.not appreciate this. Toy room at other end of house so do not mind trofast there.

Sunnysidegold · 02/09/2017 07:47

The long side is facing the front in my set. White ones do hold a lot.

Sunnysidegold · 02/09/2017 07:48

Sorry just spotted that you have tried kallax.

sleepyhead · 02/09/2017 10:59

This is ours with the boxes slotting in the other way. It's very old and battered now but doing not badly for nearly 10 years of v rough treatment! (The boxes tend to start to get a bit warped if full of heavy stuff).

Thanks sunny!

Thanks sleepy, good to see real life pics and see there's not a massive difference between styles. Looks good for ten years!
Is the height of your 3 box one ok for playing(for under 5's)?? ie where the till is?

I wonder if there's one the same height as the bottom 'step'. But then that would hold much at all.

OP posts:
Salva · 02/09/2017 20:00

Wouldn't.* hold much

Ignore the mess. This is in my living room. I have a toddler who loves dinosaurs and cars. I have tots everywhere

Ds2 is 4 but short and it's a good height for him to play at.

It's about knee height on me.

KinkyFruits · 02/09/2017 20:45

Trofast didn't work for us :(. It takes up quite a lot of space compared to how much it actually stores, as there is a lot of "dead space" between the drawers. And my kids never actually took out the drawers... even when I labeled them! They basically only play with what they can see. Plus everything just got thrown into the drawers randomly, nothing stayed organized even when it looked neat. So I ended up with what was at the time called Expedit, now they've changed the name -- basically with all of the cubes. We do have some drawers in the cubes but mostly they are open. It's much more space efficient and easier to keep things neat and organized and keep track of what's where and what we have.

We still have one Trofast unit that we use for Lego pieces in my son' room and that works fairly well with the shallow drawers.

LesbianBadger · 02/09/2017 21:25

We did this with trofast. It works really well.

That's not our actual table but is the same idea. We basically glued big base plates on the top. It's filled with small and medium boxes.

Salva · 02/09/2017 21:37

Thanks Kinky, I think the Expedit is now the kallax, which we've got, the boxes are half empty so lots of dead space there too. I've ended up using small shoeboxes or Tupperware to store small things in it, but the height of the cube isn't used IYSWIM. There does seem to be a lot of wasted space in the trofast too.

You can also get shelves for the trofast, most of ours are shelved now rather than tub-ed.

Salva · 04/09/2017 06:45

Thanks Dum,
Good to know about the shelves.
I bought it yesterday and the kids have rediscovered old toys already. One kallax box into 3 small tub. Much easier to see everything.
