Wheelie Bin and Maggots -- Help!

I had a maggot infestation so sprayed with fly spray...as in literally coated the bin white, but the darn things wouldn't die. Google suggested bleach...so i coated the sides of the bin with bleach.

With hindsight, i actually think the suggestion is for an empty bin and not one filled to the rim with rubbish!

Bin collection is tomorrow.. Have I made a mess for the bin collectors ie: they'll have to deal with bleach coated rubbish bags, or do they just wheel the bin to the garbage truck and that gets emptied?

I feel like a bit of an idiot

You should probably wash it out, it wouldn't be fair for the binmen to get bleach over their skin, potentially eyes and stain their clothes.

If it's your general rubbish bin then I think you need to rebag everything and then rinse out your bin.

If it's a food/garden waste bin which doesn't have bags in then I'd do some weeding or mow the lawn and try to clean the sides of the bin a bit as I put the cuttings/weeds in.

But yes, cleaning bins is for when they are empty. If there's a chance that the binpeople will need to put their hands into your bin (to collect bags etc) then you need to tidy it up a bit so that they aren't going to get covered in bleach.

We have had this a few times. I have emptied and rebagged just to get to the source of the problem which is usually a carcass from a roast chicken. It's totally gross and I retch through the whole process but it's the only way to stop them. Bleach in the bin works, and I use ant powder too.

We had it so bad one night, in the pouring rain the maggots were crawling up my patio doors and windows. My patio was swimming in them, there was hundreds of the. It resembled something out of a horror movie. I thought I had got rid of them all until it started raining again the following night.

Now I freak out at the sight of a grain of cooked rice anywhere near the bin!

Zap them and zap the, quick, they are bloody awful.

So this morning I waited for the bin men to turn up and ran out and profusely apologised for the state of my bin, and they were not fussed at all. They said that a few bangs on the side of the wheelie would have them all fall out.

Will need to give it a good scrub at the weekend. Yes -- Doseydots we had rain yesterday and they were falling out of the sides like rice overflowing a pot. This may have put me off rice for life!

There's a product called Bin Buddy for killing pests lurking in the outside bins.

I use wheelie bin liners and double bag everything

The wheelie bin liners are great as if there are any maggots they are tipped out with the bag which i tie up before the bin men come

I had that awful experience a few years ago .We were about to go on holidays and I emptied the kitchen bin and found our outside bin covered in maggots . I had to empty everything into double plastic bags and seal them and then get into the car for a long journey .I was just heaving and had the feeling they were crawling all over me.Since then I am paranoid about the bin and what goes into it.That meaning , in summer absolutely NO leftover meat or bones .I put all scraps into plastic bags and freeze them (have one drawer in my freezer for this purpose) and then put them out before bin collection.Other than that also bin liners and everything bagged and sealed.

sorry !!!

Mummaofboys · 06/09/2017 15:38

There's a weekly wheelie bin cleaning company that can come around and sanitise your bin after it's been empty every week, why don't you see if there is one in your area? Usual go by the names of 'bin squad' or ' wheelie wash'
