Talk to me about 'hotel style' bedding

catgotmytongue1234help · 29/08/2017 13:53

I've decided that now as my favourite hobby is sleeping it's time for a bedding upgrade.

Pillows, duvet, bedding... what should I be looking for?

What is soft but also light? I once had a feather duvet that squashed me Confused

Also what is bigger than a king size bed? I annoyingly bought a king size bed which has a 4 inch edge feature which I am forever banging my shins on- what size would cover the decorative edging?

Super King is the step up from King size & is 6' x 6'6" 180cm x 200cm

We like white Eygptian Cottom, either from John Lewis or M & S. With the highest thread count & it is the most expensive but will give you decades of wear. We always have an Egyptian cotton flat sheet on top and therefore change that much more frequently than changing the duvet cover. That is in fact my top tip!

In the summer we swap the duvet for a beadspread but still use a top sheet which is great when it's really warm as we can toss the bedspread off but still be covered with the delicious, comfortable cotton.

Have fun choosing!

btw, it occurs to me to see if a super king mattress would fit your bed frame; as you describe it having what I imagine to be a plinth?

I'm not sure about "hotel style" but hotel quality is hard wearing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/08/2017 15:06

Egyptian cotton from Viceroy bedding on line.

newmumwithquestions · 29/08/2017 15:12

Regarding size check out European king - bigger than king, smaller than superking (it's closer to king than super king, 160x 200 I think).

And hotel style bedding? Egyptian cotton high thread count.

I have a John Lewis Hungarian goose down duvet, it's Supremely light, I love it!

catgotmytongue1234help · 29/08/2017 15:35

Thank you so much for your replies - is the Hungarian goose down heavy or light? I am going to suss this bedding thing out!

I once slept under a mulberry silk duvet - the duvet was filled with silk, not covered with it. It was amazing - practically weightless, and so cosy at the same time.

John Lewis sell them. I should imagine they are horribly expensive, but if I had the money I'd buy one in a shot.

mando12345 · 29/08/2017 16:28

Hi I got the all seasons duvet, so I've got two that clip together, it's a 4.5 and 9. There are more expensive duvets from John Lewis. If you go in store you can feel the different qualities. We felt this was a good balance between luxury and cost!

Rojak · 29/08/2017 16:30

I have a silk filled duvet - I prefer it to down (light, warm & no escaping bits)

mando12345 · 29/08/2017 16:35

Just to add we have never put them together, the 9 tog was warm enough all winter. And I've just checked and it is the luxury Hungarian goose down.
We also have a vi spring mattress from John Lewis which I love too!

I too need to upgrade my linen though so I shall follow with interest.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2017 17:41

DH bought himself a 'hotel' memory foam pillow today - it's a bit to big for any of our pillowcases.

rabaria · 29/08/2017 17:44

I have a mulberry silk duvet - it's awesome. Like sleeping in a cloud - and adjusts to your body temperature so is warm or cool as you need it to be.

Other than that I use silk pillow cases.

But mid- range sheets - I need lots of them because I like a fresh and clean one every day

YorkshireTree · 29/08/2017 21:24

New sheets everyday???

Are you drowning in washing?

BubblesBuddy · 29/08/2017 21:32

For ideas about bedding, look at The White Company web site. They all look luxurious. Also, cannot see anyone who has mentioned a mattress topper. A good one, with a reasonable depth, is like sleeping on a cloud. Much better than a standard mattress cover. You may need deep sheets to fit though. Super king is a good size. Don't get anything that's not standard. Super king is available anywhere.

I love bedding and if I could only stop buying it on offer and spend this on nice stuff I'd be sorted

Crumbs1 · 31/08/2017 21:19

We have a family bed which is emporer sized 6'6" wide. Agree White company Egyptian cotton feels the most luxurious. We have crisp rather than soft.
We paid out for a good hybrid pocket sprung and memory foam mattress from Feather and Black, where we bought bed from years ago. Mattress toppers are a bit too hot for us.
Agree John Lewis silk duvets are lovely and light.
Pillows are a mixture of memory foam and hypoallergenic so we can use most comfortable combination for reading/sitting/sleeping.

I have the 9 tog. It has little attachment things to add a 4.5 tog, but I've never felt the need for any more.

BigcatLittlecat · 01/09/2017 21:01

I like the sound of a silk one. We have one that's made with lambswool. Sounds as if it would be hot and heavy but it's as light as air! Love it!

BigcatLittlecat · 01/09/2017 21:06

Oh that didn't work but I was googling silk duvets and this came up! Seems reasonable to me!

Garlicansapphire · 01/09/2017 22:37

High quality mattress, high quality mattress cover, and then high thread count cotton sheets. Eqyptian cotton is very good but creases alot after washing.

I got a new bed, new mattress and bought all new pillows and sheets, duvet and covers. I cant do feather as I'm allergic so I bought hypo allergenic good quality duvet and pillows from John Lewis - you have to go and check them for volume and feel. I got a duvet that is double thickness - you un pop it for summer and thrn join them together for the higher tog rating for winter.

I went to House of Fraser and got some high thread count cotton sheets and duvet covers and pillowcases. The duvet cover was reduced in the sale from £285 pounds to £50.

But ultimately the mattress and supersoft spongey mattress cover are probably key to the feeling of real quality underneath it all.
