Bio-ethanol fire

I have an empty fireplace with a grate that used to be a gas fire but we had the gas pipes taken out as they were old and unsafe.

I like the idea of having real flames occasionally, as I love the cosiness of a real fire, but I don't need a fire all the time for heat or anything as we have gch.

I'm not very keen on using coal or wood in the grate as it seems a lot of effort and mess for a very occasional treat. I had thought about just putting those smokeless log things you get from centerparcs in when I had the urge for a real fire. But I've just heard about bio-ethanol fires which are non-harmful to the environment and not messy, and I could just pop one into my fireplace, and seem ideal really. Like this

Can anyone talk to me about the pros and cons? Thanks!

It doesn't actually look or smell much like a real fire though, does it?
If I were fortunate enough to have a grate I’d go to the trouble of building a wood fire now and then.

My friend has one of these and it's lovely. She gets a real flame and even has an oil that smells like wood smoke and none of the mess. Meanwhile I have a real log burner with all the mess, but I wouldn't be without it.
