How do you make your house smell nice?

My house doesn't smell bad, but doesn't smell nice either. When I come home there is just nothing. I've tried air freshener but that disappears within minutes and I don't really like the thought of candles burning in my house as I've tried an essential oil burner but got worried the tea light would fall or catch fire on something Blush. Most people I visit have very welcoming scents as I go into their house and I know I could just ask them ohh what's that lovely smell ?but I don't want to look like a copycat so thought I would ask here instead Smile

I saw on a different thread from ages ago some people put a few drops of essential oil in cup of boiling / hot water and leave it in the room but im not sure it will work - am going to try when I get home!

IDoDaChaCha · 01/09/2017 15:15

Sarahsue1 I use water in an old plug in: I refill the tiny bottles with water and a few drops of essential oils. The plug in heats the water and releases the scent of the essential oils. Much cheaper than buying refills....

Word of warning about reed diffusers: a friend's cat knocked one all over itself and had to go to the vets for emergency treatment as it is toxic stuff.

DodgyGround · 01/09/2017 21:41

@Sarahsue1 did you try it and what did you think?

Sarahsue1 · 01/09/2017 21:58

I didn't I'm not home yet but when I get back there am trying it out pronto!

VinsArmy · 01/09/2017 22:30

In the winter I put tumble dryer sheets behind the radiators. When they turn on and heat up the house smells like clean washing.

LuluJakey1 · 01/09/2017 22:34

Lots of fresh air, use extractor hood when cooking and M&S Basil and Neroli reed diffuser - it is a beautiful scent.

tobee · 01/09/2017 23:28

I treated myself to Ocean Bay by The White Company reed diffuser for my bathroom. It's exactly the fragrance I was after but it's extremely expensive so probably shouldn't buy again but ask for as a gift.

tobee · 01/09/2017 23:29

Ocean Tide not Ocean Bay

45DegreestoReality · 02/09/2017 07:31

IDoDaChaCha oh that's a brilliant idea! I'm going to give that a go. Thanks for sharing.

Like spam I have an Electric wax burner with wax tarts in it. Although yesterday morning I left the kitchen sink with some very hot water and Zoflora in it and the smell was lovely as I came in from work.

We have a dog, a toddler, teenage girl and ponies. The ponies arent in the house but yard boots are. My house smells nice mostly.

I always open the windows for most of the day when its warm. When it's cooler I open them at least an hour a day upstairs and maybe 20 minutes to vlow through downstairs.

I mop all through downstairs twice a week with flash and zoflora in the water.

I clean the carpets upstairs and the sofa about every 6 weeks with carpet shampoo and zoflora.

I don't have washing drying indoors apart from in the tumble dryer as although it does smell nice it causes damp.

Bathroom and downstairs loo cleaned with flash bathroom spray which smells gorgeous. Bleach down each loo every day. Splash of zoflora in the bin when I change it.

I use candles in the evening. Usually whatever I like the smell of in TK Maxx.

We went on holiday a few weeks ago and when we came home the house smelt vaguely of zoflora and wasn't stuffy.

Decide what you want it to smell of and use whichever product suits you best. I like candles personally as I can change it when I stop noticing it. Get rid of any unpleasant smells which are usually bacterial I think so disinfect and bleach where necessary and keep your house aired. Then use your scented products to create that smell.

lasketchup · 02/09/2017 09:48

Plugins? I have one in the hallway and one in the living room both in the same scent. They're the 3volution so they change smells and you don't get used to it. I can always smell them and they smell lovely. I also use zoflora in on a cotton pad in my Hoover filter when I'm doing a big clean, and after I've cleaned I pour a cap full or two into a sink of boiling water and leave it. Smells amazing!

If you like essential oils you can put them in an aroma stone. It's plugs in and you can put it on a timer.

I open windows a lot. And use one of these from muji.

IDoDaChaCha · 02/09/2017 11:30

lasketchup try my tip above using water and essential oils in your plug ins. Save a lot of money on refills.

Passthecake30 · 02/09/2017 11:39

Have any asthmatics found anything that is natural and mild to use?

I have asthma and hayfever/dust/cigarette smoke allergies so I get wheezy and an itchy nose from many things, including plug ins, candles and incense so we just wet dust, steam clean and hoover. Use hardly any cleaning products, would love to find something that I could use to make the house scented, mainly when we have visitors.

IDoDaChaCha · 02/09/2017 14:01

Passthecake30 essential oils such as peppermint and lavender are supposed to be beneficial for asthma symptoms. Doing the plug in refilled with water and a few drops of these essential oils is probably the safest way.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/09/2017 14:09

Airing each morning, check bins aren't whiffy, bit of zoflora in the water when cleaning floors, wax tarts and fragranced candles. Think the house smells okay.

abigailgabble · 02/09/2017 14:27

just do my best to get the nappy bin emptied every other day tbh

Namethecat · 02/09/2017 14:36

Soak cotton wool in essential oils and hide in the radiators . I personally don't like plug ins or artificial smells.

PickAChew · 02/09/2017 15:35

Pass the cake, I can't cope with a lot of artificial scents, either. Plug ins, febreze and the like set me off coughing.

Method grapefruit multipurpose cleaner is lovely to use with a fresh scent that doesn't hang too long and definitely doesn't make me cough, or my eyes itch. I also find that if I can stand the respiratory assault that is lush, the individual products are fine. Currently have parsely porridge soap and seanik shampoo bar out in the bathroom and they scent the room nicely without giving me a headache, making my nose stream, or other unpleasant effects s.

Passthecake30 · 02/09/2017 16:03

Thanks ido I might try essential oils, good plan.

pick I do use lush products, and have the packaging scenting my shoe drawer Blush
