Where to get a tin opener that actually does!!

I have gone through my entire adulthood in search of a tin opener that will do just that. Without the need to use a knife pliers or any other instrument to complete the task.
I have occasionally found one that works for a period of a week or two before giving up the ghost.

Suggestions please.

This thread is very old now, but we’ve recently updated our best can opener guide with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved options that actually work. We hope it’s helpful.

DH got me one from John Lewis - I think it's a good grips one? It cuts under the rim of the can, around the side, and doesn't make a sharp edge. And you can put the lid back on, very tidily.

I haven't had it long, though - most of the tins we use (not many) have ring pulls. So it hasn't been used much at all.

I try to get the ring pull type, but every now and then there will be something I want in the old type of tin. That ps me off. Why aren't they all ring pull?

I've just been and spent £6.99 on a Magican Auto, whatever that is. I thought because it was the most expensive in the shop it must work! However I seem to recall applying that theory before and being wrong!

NQC yours sounds good. I like the idea of being able to put the top back on and no sharp edges. I have a pathological fear of slicing my fingers open on them since working in A&E as a student nurse and seeing the damage a corned beef tin had done to an old dears fingers. Yuck.

Have just fetched mine, it's called a Culinaire SafetyCan. It totally looks like it won't do anything, it's all plastic, you can't find any sharp edges on it. But it does a lovely job, honest. The lid goes back on very tidily, no sharp edges, very nice.

NannyL · 30/03/2007 18:43

magican are exepensive but worth every penny and at my dads we have 2 that are over 10 years old and still open cans perfectly!

misdee · 30/03/2007 18:44

Here is the culinaire one. Wanktastic name, but good product. I just peered at it when DH bought it home. First time I used it, I was sure it was just turning around the tin, not actually opening it, as it was so easy to turn.

madoldcatlady · 30/03/2007 21:19

OOhh thats fancy! I never knew tin openers could be interesting!

Thanks for your suggestions. I might buy one of each and conduct my own comparison tesrs.

this has changed our tin opening life - leaves no sharp edge on can or lid. I was a bit sceptical but Mum got me one for Christmas and I'm a convert.

madoldcatlady · 02/04/2007 21:23

Thanks viticella (cool name!) I'll bear that in mind when the current one croaks it!!

I wonder if NotQuiteCockney would be so kind as to tell me where they got their Culinaire SafetyCan - mine has just broken after many years and I don't know where to find one ! I'm in South Africa, so please post full contact details of the supplier. Thanks . . .

I know this is an old thread, but Smile...

I bought the Culinaire SafetyCan 2 after reading this thread. It's amazing - it works, leaving no sharp edges on the lid or the tin, and the lid can then be used to close the tin again.

MackerelOfFact · 17/03/2011 10:35

I was about to post asking the same thing, except I have the added complication of it needing to be easy to use for both left and right handed people (DP is a leftie). Do any of these fit the bill?
