Anyone successfully cleaned mouldy bathroom sealant

Dettox mould and mildew is great for the grout but does nothing for the sealant. I've never found anything that even remotely helps. I've heard using Milton can work but don't know if I should be using it neat or diluting it? The shower isn't even that old so don't really want to have to replace it all.

No advice here I'm afraid but watching with interest 🙂

The best product I have found is the Wilkinson mould and mildew, it's only 75p. Spray on and leave for a bit. Only wished I'd found it sooner.

sadmum2017 · 10/08/2017 22:44

I just glug some neat bleach onto it and leave it for a couple of hours. It's not completely white again but it's 80% better.

Cillit bang mould stuff is good. Spray on, leave overnight, rinse and repeat. I'm on day 3 so far, and it's making a massive difference. And my sealant was black! scummy previous owners

emma8t4 · 10/08/2017 22:46

Bleach spray for me, spray leave rinse and keep repeating.

WeeM · 10/08/2017 22:52

I reckon I'm just not leaving it on long enough then. Bleach spray shopping for me tomorrow!

I've not tried but soak kitchen towel with preferred product and pack along the sealant.

WeeM · 10/08/2017 22:54

Oh actually I read that someone did this with cotton wool. I might try it with kitchen roll actually

I used HG mould and mildew remover, as recommended on here. It was effective.

WeeM · 10/08/2017 22:55

No need for 2 actuallys there Grin

I soak a cotton wool pleat in loads of bleach, poor bleach on the sealant & then place the bleach soaked cotton wool on the sealant. I leave it for about a day.... It works like a miracle.

TuddlesAndSisses · 10/08/2017 22:56

Soak loo roll with bleach and it makes a kind of paste, apply it to the sealant and/or grout and leave overnight

PickAChew · 10/08/2017 22:58

The easiest thing to do is to cut it out and replace it. If you have the strength in your hands to handle a sealant gun, you can do it yourself. You just need a stanley knife to take off the manky old sealant. You can get mould resistant sealant.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 10/08/2017 23:45

Make a paste of bleach and bicarbonate of soda, paint it on thickly and leave a few hours or overnight.
Rinse off.
Works really well.

Tannyfastic · 10/08/2017 23:46

Neat bleach overnight.
Had 'as new' results.
Very little effort.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 10/08/2017 23:50

That's what I do pickachew
Complete re seal every 6 month or so.
We have lots of mould Sad

Seqkat · 10/08/2017 23:51

Does leaving the cillet bang stuff on overnight not do damage? It says max five mins!

user1492324666 · 10/08/2017 23:55

The only thing that worked for me was to remove sealant and replace it. It took a long time to get rid of the old sealant, but I replaced it with the most expensive anti mould anti everything sealant I could find. So far its not come back, even though I'm not the world's most frequent shower cleaner.

WeeM · 11/08/2017 10:12

I think I will be replacing it fairly soon as I'm getting another room tiled anyway. The stuff that's there has been trowelled on so thick-it's all lumpy and thick in the corners and just a general mess!

I was told by a plumber not to use bleach on sealant as it ate into the sealant and made it porous so encouraging mould.

WeeM · 11/08/2017 22:36

Oh that's interesting Silvergran68! Too late now right enough as I did it today and only read this now...never mind! It did work a treat, most of it has completely gone and the really bad bit looks a lot better. I used the kitchen roll method and regular bleach. What I didn't think of though was keeping it away from the plug and the bleach has corroded it a bit!

MrsJayy · 11/08/2017 22:41
