How often do you replace your bin?

Not about emptying it but how often do you buy a new one?

Is 6 years a sufficient length of service for a bin ha ha? Current one is going rusty on the underneath of the bin lid, most likely if I've had something wet at the top of the pile of rubbish and it's come into contact with the lid I guess.

Considering replacing but just wondered if that would be considered a bit throwaway? (no pun intended)

I've had my simplehuman one for about 10 years now.

BellaGoth · 04/08/2017 18:24

We replace ours every time the dog works out his to open it, so roughly every 6 months. Current bin has been going a bit longer, but only because we can't find anything more dog proof. Hmm

If you need a new one you should get one!

Zeitgei5t · 05/08/2017 07:03

If it's just the rust that's the problem, clear the rust then repaint it? (Soak it in some coke a cola, the phosphoric acid will loosen the rust).

We've got a basic plastic swing-lid type bin which must be about twenty years old (was DH's before we moved in together) and still going strong. Even moved house three times with it!

A weekly wipe of both inside and on top of the lid seems to solve any problems.

Had a pedal bin bought from wilkos (i think) and it's doing great after 5 years. Virtually no wear and tear on it. Can't see us replacing it unless we wanted to get a more neutral coloured one. Ours ties in with kettle, mugs, etc.

I do need to replace our bathroom bins though as they seems to get rusty and grotty matter how I clean them.

I never see any small pedal bins that I like enough to replace them with though!

I've got a Brabantia that's 10 years old. Their customer service is excellent & they sent a new lid to me when the catch on the old one broke.

Sunnydaysrock · 05/08/2017 16:09

Brabantia here too, after spending a fortune buying different types of bins. Must have had it 12 years now, though it was completely replaced when the bottom broke after about 5 years, so agree with pp on excellent customer service.

Our kitchen bins are all under the sink. We have 3 of them that sort of got together for different general waste and recycling. They're from IKEA and are all plastic, so I just put them through the dishwasher.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 08/08/2017 01:27

When it is broken. I like ones with lids that lift up and stay open which are not so easy to find as the swing ones so I make them last. One lasted from 2004 until last year when 'someone' bashed it and broke the lid.

As with alltoad, until the automatic opening lid breaks! Usually about 10 years, then I'm shocked at how much more they cost.
