FOUR HOURS to dry four towels. That's not right is it?

We bought a super-efficient heat pump dryer a few months ago and i HATE IT!

I knew it would take 'a bit longer' than a normal dryer but FOUR HOURS to dry four towels is taking the piss isn't it? I put them in at 8.30am and they're nearly but not quite dry now at 12.45pm.

I've done two more loads of washing that are draped around the house because the dryer is still full of the first load.

So firstly, is this right for heat pump dryers, is this just what they're like?

And secondly, can I send it back after a few months just because it's a piece of useless shit and I hate it?

That sounds completely rubbish! I haven't heard of them - are they expensive?

MrsQuim · 04/08/2017 12:48

My cheap Beko condenser is super quick so I don't know why yours isn't. Sticking a dry towel in speeds up drying time too

Wafflingwell · 04/08/2017 12:49

Oh I sympathise op, my dh insisted on buying one of these and I hate it! I've sold it by overriding all the different programs and just using the timer, so for a load of towels I set it to 80 mins and it's fine.

Flimp · 04/08/2017 12:51

Do you think the timer does different things than the setting?

At the moment I'm using 'hang dry' which starts off at 2hr 30 but then stays on '5mins' for the last two hours. GRRRRRRRR

Our heat pump dryer is fab, a full load (8kg) takes just over an hour usually.

Wafflingwell · 04/08/2017 12:53

I am useless at explaining but has it got a function which allows you to set the minutes independently of the programme?

Wafflingwell · 04/08/2017 12:54

When you first set the thing off I mean?

Flimp · 04/08/2017 12:55

yes it has a minutes setting, I'll try that next. I have another four towels waiting to go in...

Definitely not right. Mine does a full load of towels to crispy dry in under 2 hours.

All the reviews of them agree that you need to select Extra dry to get stuff properly dry, but it shouldn't be taking 4 hours to get nearly there with a half load.

PickAChew · 04/08/2017 12:57

Make sure you religiously clean all the filters every time and check the condenser for fluff build up, btw.

Wafflingwell · 04/08/2017 12:58

If the minutes setting doesn't work then there's probably something wrong with the pump or the electrics (trying to sound as if I know what I am talking about).

Orangebird69 · 04/08/2017 13:00

Does 'hang dry' mean that you're supposed to finish them by hanging them dry? Therefore they won't be totally dry?

Flimp · 04/08/2017 13:03

right, thanks for that, I'm going to speak to customer services.

I clean the filters with every use.

Sorry Imperial, I didn't answer you. yes, it was expensive but they are supposed to be super cheap to run so our bills would be lower. pfft.

Flimp · 04/08/2017 13:05

the 'hang dry' thing is one of 3 settings - iron dry, hang dry and store dry. So 'store dry' would be crispy dry I guess, with 'iron dry' being slightly damp for ironing. And hang dry being somewhere in between.

I've just put in four wet towels and set the timer to an hour. We'll see!

(I bet you all can't wait)

Grin.

CastIronCookware · 04/08/2017 14:17

See, I'd love this.

I recently had to part with my 10 year old White Knight tumble which had a "cold air" cycle - I could throw literally anything in it, leave it running for 8 hours to blow cold air through the clothes and job done all dry and ready to put away.

I miss it.

I refuse to replace with a modern dryer as none have a "cold air" cycle - all of them rely on the heating element for at least part of every cycle.

Not for me.

Brownsauceandsausages · 05/08/2017 11:10

What's the verdict op? (I lead a sad life.)

Flimp · 06/08/2017 17:47

I had to switch it back on for another hour THREE TIMES. Such a piece of crap. I'll be on the phone to John Lewis customer services tomorrow morning.

Oh no, definitely sounds as if there's a fault somewhere. Hope they can fix or replace!_

I've got a John Lewis own brand heat pump. It's the same. Takes hours. I have got used to it though and like the fact that I can shove anything in it and it won't shrink. Unless it belongs to me husband who is convinced his clothes are shrinking. I think he's expanding but he tells me not to be rude!

I tend to put towels in at night before I go
To bed (I know you are not meant to leave the tumble drier running overnight).
