How to clean walls that have been abused by toddlers over several years?

My kids have messed up the walls in my living room. They are gross. There are marks of pens/ stains/ drops/ black marks/ brown marks, you name it.

If I look at the top half of my room it looks so lovely. I've tried washing the walls with warm soapy water and a sponge. I've used magic sponges and even sprayed elbow grease. All of which HG ave helped to a certain degree but was wondering if there is something else I could do.

Ideally a repaint would be perfect but we are saving up to decorate the downstairs anyway so will be a while till then. I am literally embarrassed to let people into my home.

Sugar soap?

ShuttyTown · 03/08/2017 22:42

Have you tried sugar soap?

BroodOnABudget · 03/08/2017 22:56

no I haven't! Where do I buy from? How do you use it? Sorry- have heard of it but don't really know what it is!

Another vote for the magic that is sugar soap. You can get it in any DIY store & I'm sure other places too.

Thank you. A quick Google has told me that will have it. I shall report back!

Thank you. Google has told me that will stick it. I shall report back once I've got my hands on some. Seriously though if this works, I will literally cry!

Wear rubber gloves when using sugar soap; it is very drying to skin.

I just sugar soaped our hallway walls which had everything from crayon and strawberry to soot and blood on (a combination of toddler and messy building work elsewhere in the house). It's not perfect but it is SO MUCH BETTER, and finally I feel i don't have hide away until we get round to redecorating.

I got the sugar soap from B&Q I think, and a bonus is the walls will be ready to paint when you get round to it too. When it was still wet it looked TERRIBLE and I did think "what have I done??", but once it dried thoroughly the streaks disappeared so stick with it :)

I agree with wearing gloves!

I agree with sugar soap, vent the room when you do it and use an abrasive sponge. For stubborn marks soak toilet paper in bleach and stick it on the marks. Ventilate the room well as as the paper dries it pulls out the marks. The hardest ones to get out are waked based crayons. Try a steam cleaner on those.

Wax crayon, I mean
