Best technique for removing baked on grease.

Hi all. This is probably a really basic question but am struggling to remove baked on grease from baking trays. Have tried brillo pads which get some of it but not all and seem to damage the surface of the trays. A quick Google suggested bicarb sprinkled on with vinegar added which did fizz in a rather satisfying manner but didn't actually seem to work. Only left it about 10 mins though so maybe not long enough? Any other suggestions? Tia superior housekeepers!

Astonish always works wonders for me. You can normally pick up at market stalls or Poundland.

Penguin13 · 01/08/2017 13:23

Thanks Gimboid will have a look for that. Do you need to leave it to soak at all or just spray it on and clean off straight away?

Astonish oven and cookware cleaner is a paste in a blue tub. I use it for burnt trays/pans, etc. Use a scourer sponge with it

dementedpixie · 01/08/2017 13:25

I get mine from home bargains

Thanks Demented. I'll give it a try.

fill the tray halfway with water. add bio washing powder.
bring to boil on hob.
wait until cold and then scrub.

Thanks Yellow. Tried Astonish on one pan - did a good job with some elbow grease added but not perfect. Will try your technique with the other pan. I am sad enough to have taken before/after pics Grin

Where the Astonish was absolutely brilliant was cleaning my horrible oven door which hadn't been cleaned ever for a really long time. Managed to work out how to take out the glass bits from the door and it is now sparkling. Need to do the interior next! Can't quite believe I actually used a simultaneous nap time for DD1&2 to clean my oven - what has become of me? Shock

The tray still looks pretty dirty in the second pic which was admittedly not the final result but there are some patches that are stained even though the surface is clean and smooth.

Glad to hear the Astonish worked somewhat, my mum told me about that. My baking trays get to a certain point where they can't be cleaned any more, maybe you're at that stage too!

Maybe Gimboid, although annoyingly these are relatively new as I bought them to replace previous ones which were beyond saving. They were cheapo wilkos ones though so maybe I should have paid a bit more for quality.

I have found the cheaper ones are harder to clean, maybe something to do with the coating. I ended up getting mine in TK Maxx/Homesense.

Bicarb and vinegar cancel each other out - one is alkali and the other acid. The fizz is all mouth and no trousers! Use them separately for best results. With some baking trays you can put them in the bag with Oven Pride, so no effort at all. I got a disgusting grill pan a tenant hadn't cleaned in X amount of time clean with it. Looked like new.

Thanks for the tips wowfudge.

Bio washing powder used instead of washing up liquid dissolved in a sink of hot water.
