Would you recommend your steam mop?

Many moons ago, I was lucky enough to product test a Karcher Steam Cleaner for mumsnet. It has just given up the ghost.
TBH I only ever used it for cleaning the floor (which it was brilliant on), and so I don't think I need to replace it with an all-singing steam cleaner, but would definitely like to look at getting a steam mop. Can anyone recommend anything?

I got a steam mop with attachments from Asda. It's a goblin one and it was £50. Love it. But never had one before so nothing to compare it to. This probably isn't helpful to you is it?

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 24/07/2017 21:39

That's very helpful indeed! Basically I want something smaller, and ideally cheaper than the karcher, but that works reasonably well. I'll get on the Asda website Smile.

It's green. Do you want a pic?

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 24/07/2017 21:49

yes please - or a model name/number. Thank you!

I have a polti, it was about £60 it does a brilliant job of my kitchen floor and carpets too, when I can be bothered to do them.
All the little attachments are stored inside which is good, but I can't say I use them very often.
I had a steam mop thing before, it cost more money and was very limited as to what it could do. Plus it felt really flimsy like I might snap the handle as I mopped the floor.

fatfingeredfran · 24/07/2017 22:39

Tempted to get one too - thanks for starting this thread!

kreme · 24/07/2017 22:42

Can you use them on wood floors. Asking for a friend.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 25/07/2017 08:24

kreme - i don't know about wooden floors. We have quickstep (decent laminate) which I think you're not officially supposed to steam clean. However I've steamed ours weekly for years now, with absolutely no ill effects at all.

Thanks as well for the ones to avoid.

I've recently bought the cheapest Vax that John Lewis sell. I only use water so no need for the more expensive models which have separate tanks for cleaning products.

I'm impressed. It heats up instantly and does the job wonderfully. Stows away neatly in a small cupboard too.

It says on the Vax product info that it can be used on wooden floors. We have engineered wood. There's not much water...it's steam.

rabbit123 · 25/07/2017 19:29

I bought a fancy Shark steam mop. Used it twice and it's now in the shed along with my JML nicer dicer, my hair straightening brush, novelty fitness equipment, spiraliser and other such rubbish I should've taken back.

I really should listen to DH when he says to keep the packaging.

Actually I should listen to DH when he tells me to stop buying shit we don't need.

I got a Vileda mop for a fiver in Asda Living - cleans better than the steam mop did, you can really put some force into it and scrub the floor.

Don't ever tell DH I admitted to any of the above.

SealSong · 25/07/2017 19:31

I wouldn't recommend any steam mop. They just wetly push the dirt around in my experience.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/07/2017 19:32

I've used two, one basic one from Pound land that everyone on MN raved about and one expensive Vax one- both shit as each other. God knows why people like themConfused

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/07/2017 19:32

A Vileda spray mop- is the bees knees thoughGrin

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 25/07/2017 19:36

I've got the cheapest vax one too, I like it and think it is a good balance of cost and effectiveness. We use it mainly for the kitchen tiled floor and it cleans well and dries v quickly plus isn't a big faff to set up (stick the washable cleaning pad on, fill the water tank, plug in & wait 20ish seconds and it's ready)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/07/2017 19:42

The Vax was soooooooo heavy, far too much like hard work for me Grin

SaltLiquorice · 25/07/2017 23:22

My Vax isn't heavy, it's 2.5kilos. Just over a bag of sugar. I have the John Lewis cheapest one.

I'm an e cloth user normally( just water) but now and again I like to steam clean.

I love it and for what I paid ( I think about £50) it is an excellent buy.

ItsASunnyDay · 25/07/2017 23:35

I got a vax steam mop that you can put detergent in about 2 years ago which I hated as it just pushed the dirt around our laminate floor even after hoovering.
Then I got a decent hoover (dyson) so got the steam mop out again - worked brilliantly! I will be using it again.

BlueAutumnSkies · 28/07/2017 19:42

If it is just for floors the goblin one is fine! A pain for Windows/grout etc as there isn't a hose so you have to lift the whole thing and it can be a little heavy after a while but it does a great job on our floors here particularly on toddler's crayon masterpieces on the floor
