Hideous smell in car - help!

I got back from holiday a few days ago to find the wheelie bin infested with maggots and stinking to high heaven. I bleached it all out and decided to take the bin bags that were in there to the tip.

What I didn't realise was that whatever hideous goop was in the bin bags has now leaked into the boot of my car and the smell that has been left behind is just awful - it smells like vomit!

I've taken the carpeted board out and tried Febreze first which just made it worse. Then I tried washing up liquid and a stiff brush. Now I've covered it in baking powder in the hope that it will soak up the smell, but two days on it's still not smelling good. In the meantime the rest of the car still smells hideous even though I've mopped up the goo - I can't see any other fabric area where it could have soaked in!

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell? I wish I'd never bothered now - no point in having a lovely clean bin if my car now stinks of vomit! Sad

Have you tried a diluted solution of white vinegar? It will not make your car smell of vinegar.
I once saw a tip that eau de cologne removed vomit smells. Don't know if they still sell the cheap ' old lady ' stuff.

Zoflora solution? It is a disinfectant and odour neutraliser. Neutradol carpet powder stuff?

When I've had a child vomit in the car the smell always lingers, despite scrupulous cleaning up. I get rid of it with vinegar.

This evening, put a cup or small bowl of vinegar in the car, and leave it there - windows closed - for as long as possible. Overnight, at least. When you want to use the car again, pour the vinegar away and drive off with the windows open. The vinegar smell disperses very quickly (as long as you haven't spilled any in the car!), and the vomit smell should be gone. If not, repeat the vinegar treatment. If the smell is still there after two treatments, then there is some crevice or piece of fabric somewhere that remains contaminated with the source of the smell.

When I spilt milk in the back of my car and didn't realise for a while ( until it stunk) the only thing that worked was some stuff from the pet shop that was designed to clean " organic matter" i.e. Pet poo!!

You want bicarbonate of soda, not baking powder, to neutralise smells. I'd go with Simple Solution pet stain and odour remover. It is brilliant. Try swabbing whatever is on there up with old towels first.

Take it to a car valeting place?

Try sprinkling fresh ground coffee (not used! Straight from the bag) around the car and leave it for a few days before vacuuming up.

Also works in a small bowl in a smelly fridge (when your DH has bought cheese so ripe and yummy that it can almost walkConfusedConfused).

Thanks all, some great suggestions - I shall try them all! Grin
