My cat has sprayed yet again and my whole bleeding downstairs reeks of it. Cat has had his bits chopped, and doesn't do it often, but when he does it's UNBEARABLE!!!!! Right MNers I'm relying on you: a) How do i stop him? b) how do I get rid of the stink? I've identified an area of carpet and one of the kids school rucksacks (!) as the place he's actually sprayed, but the stench is spreading as I type.

dettol, then febreze

oddly i found when we stopped letting our cat upstairs he stopped spraying in the house.... he wasn't the dominant one anymore and doesn't see it as his territory.

NOOOO!!!! Dettol is encouraging because it's acrid. You need to dissolve biological washing powder in boiling water, let it cool and then sponge down whatever has been sprayed. The washing powder eats the enzymes in the spray and it also gets rid of the stink.

Oh and cats do this when they feel insecure. So don't yell at him otherwise you'll have the same thing every sodding morning (as I found out the hard way!)

The smell & any stains can be removed my spraying the area with white vinegar (1 part) & warm water (3 parts).

Dab up the excess urine, soak with solution, dab up.

My pup used to have little accidents & this isthe ony thing that stops stains & smells.

I tried the soap powder route, made it worse IMO.

But agree, no dettol/bleach etc. Has ammonia in it which actually smells a bit like the urine, so encourages it.

Soda crystals work too (but wear gloves!!!!)

PinkTulips · 25/03/2007 13:16

maybe it wasn't dettol then? something toxic in a spray bottle from the supermarket, worked a treat!

tinkerbellhadpiles · 25/03/2007 13:18

Oh and to stop a repeat performance I put a small pot of catmint in the corner he used to go for. Now he's high as a kite and wouldn't dream of doing it again (moving his food to that area (when clean) works too.)

Thanks for all the advice. And I'll try not to shout at the cat and stress him even more!!
