Bathroom odours

Our bathroom has a fan but no window. Fan is on whenever we shower. I clean the bathroom every week and there is no visible mould. We occasionally get some around the taps and use astonish mould spray to sort that.
The bathroom stinks. I try to leave the door wide open whenever I can, but it's not helping. It smells wet and festering. I'm not a fan of aerosol so I don't want to just cover the smell. Are there any home remedies to sort this?

Is it the towels/ bath mat?

Do you put a cleaner or bleach down the plugs regularly?

Clean around the outside of the loo?

Have you taken the side of the bath of to check for any slow leaks?

What flooring do you have?

GailTheFish · 12/07/2017 13:25

If it's damp could you regularly have a dehumidifier running either in the bathroom or nearby? They can be amazing in collecting moisture in the air.

Bath mat and towels washed regularly, plus only a hand towel in there as we don't have a large rail. Flooring is that nasty cheap lino but DH steam mops it every week, including around the toilet. I bleach and clean toilet each week but will also chuck some bleach in there a few times each week so it can sit and do its thing.
Could it be under the lino? It doesn't look as if it's fitted particularly well (cheap rental).

The rest of the flat is bone dry and there's no damp patches in bathroom so I'm reluctant to spend out for a dehumidifier.

I'd have that lino up and check underneath.

Have a look at the grout and the seals round the bath and shower tiles. Remove the bath panel and have a look. It sounds as though something constantly getting wet and no air circulation to dry it out. Are there any loose tiles? Check the walls of adjacent rooms at skirting and floor level, lifting carpets if necessary.

I suspect it's mould/mildew under the flooring, not helped by steam cleaning which forces more moisture into the joins/edges.

I clean the drains regularly with unblockers and erm.. I forgot the word for "de-smellers" haha!

I also make sure all wet towels / flannels are washed asap and try to keep general washing at a minimum as much as I can help it.

Wash your bath mats if you have them and generally keep it clean as much as you can.

Parazone do paper-free in cistern cleaning tablets (paper ones stain the loo!), that helps for toilet drain smells.

I put some of those air neutralisers about (cheap ones from home bargains), it helps.. a bit.

I honestly thought that was a joke advert when I first saw it!

We had this in a rental and it was the drains. In the end a plumber came and did something to the overflow and bath drain and it was totally sorted out.
