Washing white converse?

Oliack1417 · 07/07/2017 20:11

Has anyone got any advice for successfully machine washing white canvas converse? I've tried once before with another pair, and I found the glue seemed to seep, causing yellowing at the seams.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Cold wash with lots of vanish in there? Or a wool wash on cold?

Oliack1417 · 07/07/2017 20:18

Oh yes, I have some vanish ruba..

I often wash plimsolls and they come up lovely, but on one pair the glue did seep a bit, so yes, low temp and some kind of whitening powder probably best.

Hand wash.

I do mine all the time and they come out as good as new. Washing machine with normal powder, each trainer and lace in pillow cases. Ideally with a towel in the wash too to cushion the spin.

Will this work for my white Supergas too? They desperately need a wash but never known weather I can put them in the machine?

Oliack1417 · 07/07/2017 20:45

Ooh thanks LadyP!

I put my Supergas on a 30 degree wash with a towel in the machine about once a month and they have been fine.

I made a paste of bicarb and hydrogen peroxide, scrubbed it in with an old toothbrush, left them in the bright sunshine for a couple of hours and then put them in the washing machine with some oxy stain remover on a 30C wash. They came up brilliantly.
Dd has borrowed them again and got grass stains on them so looks like I'll be doing it again! A it time consuming but worthwhile for how they come up.

Thanks rum. Here do you get hydrogen peroxide?!

I put liquid bleach on them inside the drum, left for ten minutes and then washed on a delicate cycle.

Cantstopeatingchocolate · 07/07/2017 22:51

Definitely cool wash.
Low spin too and air dry slowly i.e. Not on or under a radiator.

I worked for a sports company and we would refuse to refund on trainers that had clearly been washed in a machine (glue melted, soles shrunk, stank of Bold or Ariel etc) our advice was only machine wash removable parts like insoles. Can't tell if they've been in the machine if you do the instructions above.

I'd try Jason Marx shoe cleaner first, before chucking them in the machine. It's amazing.

Im a bit shocked at this. I have always washed white converse in 40 degree wash & they come out gleaming. They last forever. Always high tops so I'm not sure if they are different. Sorry that's not a great help. Maybe just try it on a lower temp wash.

Oliack1417 · 08/07/2017 07:48

Thanks everyone!
