I work from home p/t two jobs some days busier than others but equally not to much and I am also a stay at home mum (4&3) But yet I feel like I never have time to do anything what am I doing wrong!!!

I have two kids, dogs and am failing miserably at staying on top of housework and especially the clothes (washing drying is fine its the putting it away FML lol)

How many of you have a set routine I need some tips!! MIL and my own mum both not around for tips etc so winging this!! I love everything really tidy and just so but then feel guilty that I am not playing with the kids enough and I don't ever feel like I fully achive anything prob like every other mum. Not enough hours in the day!!!

I can recommend the book - A clean and organized house in 30 days. A different task to be done every day and then daily maintenance tasks. Should mention that it took me longer than 30 days though😂

I sweep and vacuum every day as I have cats and a dog. Clean the kitchen, all the countertops, hob, sink, etc. Clean the toilets and wipe down the sinks. Make the bed. I usually dust quickly everyday with a couple of dust wipes, then a full dusting once a week.

bimbobaggins · 08/07/2017 20:02

I make beds , have a general tidy, do a washing, clean bathroom with wipes usually on a daily basis.
Hoover and floors once a week, dust weekly, iron weekly, deal with any paperwork etc weekly.
I like to do small amounts regularly than having a big full day clean.

I do a lot less than the above posters!

Actual cleaning is as follows:
I aim for once a week to do everything - bathroom, clean floors, mirrors and polish.
Kitchen sides and hob get cleaned after dinner each night and before prepping food.
Things like skirting boards get done when I remember.

In between that I'll do things when needed - so Hoover when needed, clean things as I see them. Wipe loo over when needed. Bath gets rinsed after use and I'll wipe down shower door if it looks water marked:

Washing I do when I have enough for a full load, some days that's two loads because we've been swimming and there's towels for example, other days I don't do any. Putting clothes away is my downfall, there can be piles in baskets in the bedroom for days waiting for me to summon the energy/enthusiasm.

I try to keep the place as tidy as I can though, and tidy up everything of an evening so it's all clear ready for the morning. So toys away, washing in baskets, any bits of washing up from the evening in sink etc

The place is usually presentable, not perfect but doesn't look grubby.

I only have one DC, second is due early next year, my standards will get even lower!

Beds changed weekly, dishwasher emptied and filled daily, clothes washing 3 loads a week. Vacuuming every 3 days, kitchen floor mopped every 3 days.

Then on a Monday I set timer on my phone for 30 mins to clean 3 Rooms, Wednesday I do the same for remaining three rooms then hallway, stairs and landing on a Saturday. Usually each room takes about 15 mins. Deep clean every 3 months.

Things like kitchen sides and cupboard fronts are wiped with Dettol wipes while I wait for kettle to boil but only every few days.

Rooms are tidied each night before bed so we don't come down to last nights mess.

All in all about 4 hours a week but to get to this, was months of decluttering and deep cleaning so now these are maintenance cleans and the 3 month deep clean takes 5 hours or so.

Daily I Hoover downstairs and do a load of laundry. I always put the laundry away after tea when I'm running the dc bath. It never gets too much then and just becomes part of the daily routine.
Weekly I do upstairs, dust downstairs and wash floors and clean the bathroom. I clean the loo and the sink as needed during the week. Usually when bathing the dc!

OhTheRoses · 08/07/2017 22:24

Goodness.

Daily I do dishwasher and a load of laundry. Always leave everything tidy at bedtime and obviously keep hob sparkling and kitchen clean after supper. Change our bed fortnightly and dcs the alternate fortnight.

Weekly my cleaner Hoover's whole house, cleans bathrooms and bogs and does hard floors and all the ironing. 5 hours.

Once or twice a year I have cleaners in to do paintwork, skirting, deep dust, pictures, lampshades, pull out furniture etc.

Have oven cleaned twice a year too although am good with foil, etc.

Honestly it is all spic and span. Carpets d's do with a clean though.

More than sufficient. Must confess I am more interested in the outdoor housework. I hate cleaning.

I work full time x

Kitchen floor

seventhgonickname · 09/07/2017 10:54

Who makes beds?
I'm with you on the putting washing away,I put away things that don't need ironing and the ironing pile grows.
My dd has now started to iron her things as she knows I may never get around to them, result.

Purplemac · 09/07/2017 10:58

I try to do a weekly big clean - mop, clean bathroom and toilets, vacuum upstairs, wipe down grubby leather sofas, all on a sunday. During the week I make sure the kitchen is clean every night (including dishwasher loaded and turned on) and that the kitchen and living room at tidied up. Sweep every few days as needed. Washing done every few days as needed.

OhTheRoses · 09/07/2017 14:31

Thing is though I unload dishwasher whilst kettle boils. Whilst my hair dries a bit I unload washing machine, hang wet washing, put new load on, fold and put away what's dry. Takes less than ten minutes. Am out of the house in 1hr 15 and It's luxurious - grown up dc. Used to do it in 1hr 30 and it was full on but still doable and I was 15 years fitter Grin

You are home with the kids full time, plus working part time at two jobs??? If so you are doing more than enough. You cannot expect yourself to do much of anything else at all, housework is going to have to be something your other half does! Even if you do have childcare you are still doing a lot, I think you are in a time of your life when housework is going to have to relax a bit.
I tend to do manic half hour cleans when someone is coming over, zap bits of the bathroom when the kids are in the bath, DP wipes down the kitchen every evening and one or other of us usually sweeps the floor round the table and tidies up downstairs after bedtime. Whoever isn't supervising the bath tidies the kids room (although ideally whoever isn't cooking does this with the kids before supper). Dishwasher on every evening, washing machine on every morning or all is lost. No ironing ever and laundry gets put away daily ideally, in real life about once a week when one of us cracks and does it. We do cook from scratch every meal, and eat lateish all together. Yummy food trumps shiny floors round ours!

Currently in mat leave. I have given up trying to do much whilst the kids are awake and just do housework in the evenings once they're in bed (not every evening anyway). Am sure this is wrong for many reasons - children not involved, loss of my free time etc - but I've decided I don't care because it's too disheartening trying and failing to do housework when they're awake.

GoingRogue · 10/07/2017 17:44

SAHM here. Kids are now 3 and 6, and I have a teenage stepson who stays EOW. I'm finally starting to feel like the housework is manageable lately (I don't have bags of natural energy, and generally don't enjoy cleaning, plus youngest now at preschool 15hrs p/w). House has 4 beds, 2 baths, large conservatory, mostly hardwood floors which need vacuuming then mopping.

Here are my tips;

  1. if your washing machine has a timer function, load it before going to bed and set it for 8hrs time. It's then ready to hang out when you wake.
  2. put dishwasher on every night, then unload whilst kettle is boiling in the morning
  3. of you haven't already, get a handheld vacuum. My Dyson has changed my life! Just do 7min spurts a couple of times a day, every day.

I've come to realise if I want it nice, I have to clean something every day Sad

Oh, and most importantly - make sure dh pulls his weight! Mine does loads on the weekends, Inc cleaning the oven, helping kids tidy their rooms, deep cleaning bathroom for example. He also takes it in turns to get up in the morning with the kids so does dishwasher. Always gets them ready for school whilst I get myself ready.
