Help, we've got fleas.

They seemed to arrive over night and are everywhere.
We have cats that have monthly deflea stuff from the vet and so first I gave them both a slightly early dose, users fine toothed comb on them and found a few fleas on one cat and non on the other.I am combing them every day but they are clear.
WishI could say the same of the house.I have vacuumed every day, washed everything loose, vacuumed beds,,chairs , sofas and sprayed everywhere with insecticide.
Granted the ones we see now look smaller but is there a better ,quicker way to clear the little *?

Vacuum everything. Get the nozzle out and vacuum along the line between the floor and the skirting board. Vacuum all the cracks on hard floors. Vacuum under beds and other furniture. Fleas lay their eggs in places they're not likely to be disturbed and can May dormant in carpets and cracks in floorboards or in laminate for up to 6 months.

Indorex spray (eBay / amazon / vet)

Stevieo · 05/07/2017 23:20

We used all sorts of expensive flea bombing, sprays ect etc. The only thing that worked is getting a cordless dyson and hoovering everywhere as many times as day as possible.

Put a plate or glass bowl with low sides, fill it with washing up liquid and water and leave them on the floor in the most affected areas in each room.

seventhgonickname · 06/07/2017 15:04

I am hoovering like a lunatic but have ordered bombs, nothing to loose really as the sprays don't seem to work.
I'm having the house painted soon and really want them gone before we put down new carpets.

Borax works wonders for the carpets. Sprinkle it everywhere and leave it overnight. Vacuum in the morning. Also, make a pan of soapy water and place it on the floor under a nightlight in dark rooms. Dark as possible. The fleas jump to the light and fall into the soapy water and drown. It's very effective.

God, it's a nightmare when a real infestation takes hold. We had one a few years ago - both cats and dogs had them - which we treated with drops on the neck from the vet- it was warm weather, and we came back from holiday and the little blighters were erupting from the carpet, We could see them jumping around.

It takes a bit of time to control them, because more keep hatching out, so keep doing what you're doing, plus get some Indorex spray. Hoover first, then spray - carpets, skirting boards, sofas, the lot. They will go.

seventhgonickname · 08/07/2017 12:52

They seem to be smaller and only in 2 rooms now
I use a wet bar of soap in the morning so all the early jumpers on my feet get it.
The stuff from the vets does not seem to be working on the cats.

What spray did you use? Indorex is the best one. That and vacuuming everywhere daily for a couple of weeks. Also, which drops did you get from the vets?

QuestionableMouse · 08/07/2017 12:57

Stronghold is the only thing that works to kill fleas. If you have Front line, it's nearly useless now.

Put a thick coat of table salt around the edges of your carpets.

NoSquirrels · 08/07/2017 13:04

We had fleas we couldn't get rid of on regularly Frontlined cats. Then vet gave us Broadline, still fleas. Day after changing to Advantage the cats were flea-free.

You must treat the house (Indorex) but if the cats aren't properly treated with an effective flea killer then it'll keep going...

ShoesHaveSouls · 08/07/2017 13:08

We've successfully kept them at bay since the Grand Infestation with Advantage. But I seem to remember it taking a few weeks to completely de-flea pets and house- it was horrendous.

ShoesHaveSouls · 08/07/2017 13:10

*Perhaps it just felt like weeks! It was a while though, to get every single one of the little bastards. My legs were covered in bites in the middle of summer. I'd sit on the sofa, and see little black specks jumping onto me.

seventhgonickname · 08/07/2017 13:26

I think we had broardline and one has had an extra dose of frontline.Ok,Will be back to the vets.Have Indorex.
We are at the little black specs stage,dd seems tastier than me

Our vet told me that some fleas are now resistant to Frontline so they have stopped using it. We now use Advocate.

OneDayIWillBeOrganised · 08/07/2017 13:31

Just notciced you have Broadline. Vet also told us that anything with 'line' in name was similar composition to Frontline.
Might be worth trying a different brand next time cats are due to be treated.

QuestionableMouse · 08/07/2017 13:42

Stronghold is a completely different active ingredient to Front line.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 08/07/2017 13:46

We used to alternate Frontline and Advantage to good effect but when Bravecto spot-on first came out for cats our vet recommended we switch to that as it only needs applying every 12 weeks. It's worked fine too.

whatpardonwhat · 08/07/2017 13:48

Salt all the carpets - the salt dries up any eggs. Aim for the bits closest to the walls/skirting/door frames. Advice from vet and it works and is far less toxic :)

HeteronormativeHaybales · 08/07/2017 13:49

When we had fleas (this was with untreated cats as we rather stupidly thought indoor cats didn't need it Confused ) flea bombing and a bit of supplementary spraying got rid of them. It got most of them within a week, then I had the odd bite (they only ever bit me Hmm, not dh or the dc, and I'd had loads during the infestation) for the next three or four months, then nothing.

seventhgonickname · 09/07/2017 10:56

Thank you all,I am going to salt my carpets.

We have these turned on in different areas of the house it works scarily well but will only catch them in a small area.

Ask your vet for a tablet called capstar. Once a cat has fleas the spot on treatment won't work, the tablet will kill all of the fleas on the cat. Make sure you spray the whole house with indorex at the same time and wash everything you can on at least 60°. It all needs to be done simultaneously for it to work, we spent a whole day de-fleaing. Follow up with daily hoovering for a few weeks too. Good luck!
