How to get rid of smoke smell from baby chair cover..?!

I bought a second hand baby rocker/chair thingy today, it's a special one that's very expensive new so it wasn't dirt cheap second hand either, about £50!

I was pretty disappointed to find that once I got home I noticed it stinks of smoke Sad I just put the seat cushion/cover through a 3 hour long 40 degree wash with plenty of washing powder, a prewash and an extra rinse afterwards, and the fabric still whiffs of smoke! How the hell do you get that stink out? I'm really not happy! I also feel sorry for the kids that live in that smokey house!

Hang it out on the line
(I once bought ds a leather-look jacket for a fancy dress day that was similar - long wash and 24h on the line and it was wearable. I felt for the original owner too.)

Good idea - wish it wasn't raining tomorrow!

No, let it hang out in the rain, that will be even better. Fresh rain water on it for a few days and wind will surely sort the smell out.

Then after a day or 2, put it on another wash and dry as normal.

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2017 03:32

It doesn't matter if it's raining! Hang it out for 48 hours minimum and then rewards.

PotteringAlong · 30/06/2017 03:32

Rewards? Rewash!

Febreeze
Washing line

Out2pasture · 30/06/2017 04:06

wash the non fabric bits as well and let that air out

BayLeaves · 30/06/2017 14:48

Oh good, thanks Smile I didn't realise rain could do it good. I hung them out on the line this morning thinking it would be dry but then it chucked it down! So hopefully that's freshened then up a bit. Will leave them outside and rewash tomorrow... fingers crossed.

Is it actually safe to use with a baby?

BayLeaves · 30/06/2017 21:57

ZopperGinc I don't think smokey things are safe for babies at all Sad That's why I want to get rid of the smell, and presumably the pollutants. I'm not happy this was sold to me in that state.

In future I will be a lot more careful to check if things come from a smoke free home before buying second hand stuff!

can't you buy new covers online? i wouldn't want anything remotely smokey anywhere near my baby Sad

is it one of those big white egg things that swings/rocks/vibrates/costs £300?

ZopperGinc · 30/06/2017 22:24

I don't know if you can be sure it's gone just because you can't smell it any more, though. I'd worry it smelling better might just mean one of the smellier chemical components has been washed off but others may remain.

CosmoSmallpiece · 30/06/2017 22:28

No health risks of course, even according to link above the risks are unproven. Even non smokers homes contain traces of nicotine etc. , just shows how brain washed the public has become about the invented dangers of smoking. Anyhoo, as long as you're happy taking your kids out in fresh air which is proven to kill 20000 a year and 'third hand' smoke has killed 0 then feel free to worry.

Longdistance · 30/06/2017 22:33

Years ago, when I was a clubber and smoking was allowed in them days, my clothes and hair used to stink.

My hair I would wash.

My clothes I would hang outside in the line.

Fresh air always wins against cigarette smoke.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 30/06/2017 22:38

Fresh air will sort it. My lovely but smokey auntie made a set of Moses basket covers for DD, which were delivered to my mum while I was in hospital. By the time we came out they were Persil-fresh and lovely.

slothqueen · 30/06/2017 22:39

"The invented dangers of smoking" Hmm
Ridiculous comments from cosmo aside I would wash and air it a couple of times. Give all the none- fabric parts a really thorough clean as well.
If you're still not happy can you contact the seller and return it? I think I would.

Second, febreze - wash and rinse twice - then washing line.
