How do you keep your recycling bin clean without having to rinse everything first?

Do you put in a liner and change it every time you empty it? I'm fed up of the baked bean juice, chopped toms, yoghurt leftovers ending up smeared all over the place [boak]

We rinse it all as our council says it has to be clean.
You can get clear liners for recycling though.

Bue · 29/06/2017 16:41

You are supposed to rinse everything before it goes in the bin.

Cakescakescakes · 29/06/2017 16:41

Rinse it.

hugoagogo · 29/06/2017 16:42

Yuk! We wash stuff out and it still gets pretty grim in there.

dun1urkin · 29/06/2017 16:43

Rinse it. A lot of it is sorted by hand at the other end. Think of those poor souls who have to endure the bean juice.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/06/2017 16:43

We only recycle paper and cardboard.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 29/06/2017 16:44

Why would you not rinse everything first? It takes seconds to do it with the dishes. Surely dirty things in the recycle bin would count as contaminated?

Synecdoche · 29/06/2017 16:44

Another rinser here. I give it a quick swish around in the old washing up water to save on water.

Eolian · 29/06/2017 16:47

You're supposed to wash it.

Baalam · 29/06/2017 16:48

I wash or rinse it.

clarrylove · 29/06/2017 16:49

Ewk! Can't believe you wouldn't rinse out first!

caringcarer · 29/06/2017 16:50

We rinse out tins before throwing away but also we have a person who comes and washes out wheely bins for £1.50 per bin each month. They are very reliable and do a good job.

Leviticus · 29/06/2017 16:51

I can't believe you don't rinse it! Our council wouldn't take it otherwise.

MsPassepartout · 29/06/2017 16:55

Our council say that you have to rinse it first so that it's clean.

So we rinse it.

Iamastonished · 29/06/2017 16:57

Why aren't you rinsing the tins and bottles out first? Our council requests that we rinse ours, and I guess that your council would like you to as well.

You are just being lazy.

SafeToCross · 29/06/2017 16:59

I just checked, and our council says rinse. However I have previously heard that some only say to scrape out so I can see where the OP is coming from.

chemenger · 29/06/2017 16:59

Our council also says you have to rinse. And if you don't your bin will be foul, so its worth it for that.

RhythmNBooze · 29/06/2017 17:03

I'm afraid I am a compete slattern and I don't rinse first. We empty daily and the bin men have never said anything.

I doubt swishing a bit of water round will make it non-contaminated Hmm

We also have the bins cleaned every 4 weeks.

It is not sorted by hand by the way. We have a mixed recycling bin and it all gets sent to a place where it is sorted mechanically.

I don't know why I didn't think to use liners and then just throw them away after.

"I don't know why I didn't think to use liners and then just throw them away after."

More landfill Hmm. Just rinse them out you lazy slattern.

VintagePerfumista · 29/06/2017 17:11

Er, you do rinse them or there is little point them being recycled full of food waste!

How revolting.

VintagePerfumista · 29/06/2017 17:12

Our council actually check and you get fined if they find unwashed tins etc in the recycling bin.

Iamastonished · 29/06/2017 17:12

And wouldn't they smell in hot weather?

RhythmNBooze · 29/06/2017 17:19

To clarify I didn't mean throw away the liners each time, just when they get manky.

I'm also not chucking half empty cans in there so they're not full of food waste. But I can see I am most definitely in the minority. I admit I am a lazy bugger.

Yes, I swill everything out and leave to dry before putting into recycling bin. There's no wet in the bottom of bin when emptied Halo

ragged · 29/06/2017 17:54

Result not perfect but of course I try to clean everything that goes in the recycling bin.

The bin-men won't say anything, but at the recycling facility your dirty recycling will contaminate other recycling & make it all non-recycable. If you're putting really dirty stuff in recycling bin then you may as well forget recycling bin & stick it all in rubbish bin where it will end up, anyway.

(Reusing other plastic bags, I never buy plastic bags for anything) I also double bag all the regular rubbish to try to cut down on the rubbish bin getting manky.
