Spider under my bed

How can I deal with this please?
Not only afraid of them, also disabled so unable to move furniture (or run away).

ignore it.
it's just a spider. it will not eat you or bite you.

rabbit123 · 23/06/2017 22:13

Get the vacuum on it with the long extension tube

iMatter · 23/06/2017 22:20

I love spiders.

However I understand the recommended advice in these situations is to burn your house down.

3littlebadgers · 23/06/2017 22:23

Start calling it 'little spider friend' I was petrified before I had children, but I was determined for them not to be scared and so would try to be endearing towards them so as to convince the dcs that spiders were ok. Seems as though I have convinced myself too! I can now have them on my hand and not bat an eyelid! I even held a tarantula Smile

EmNetta · 23/06/2017 22:27

Thanks for both replies. Will try repeating your info, YellowLawn, but am fairly sure I'll be sleeping in spare room until brother can get here.

I think they just crawl out of vacuums rabbit, so would have to leave it on the drive overnight, assuming I could find spider again.

I was in bed early, feeling unwell, then got up to cool off and saw the furry thing from corner of my eye. Tried squashing it with tissue, but must have missed it.

I used to have some spray made from chestnuts, but can't find it now - any more suggestions please?

Always helpful when people say "it's just a spider" to those with an irrational fear of spiders. Confused

EmNetta · 23/06/2017 22:40

I might just burn house down, if I had a spare one nearby.

Should have started talking to it much earlier, 3badgers, as I do like the idea and can see it might work in the long term. I don't like killing anything, but am too nervous to share my bed with these crawlers.

Peppermint, horse chestnuts, walnuts or vinegar are all supposed to chase them away apparently.

EmNetta · 24/06/2017 00:23

Thank you Red, I do have assorted vinegars, which I plan to try tomorrow, starting with the white vinegar spray we use for windows; I've none of the others

OP posts:
RedastheRose · 24/06/2017 00:48

I think you make it up with white vinegar and water so the window spray is probably very similar. Good luck getting rid of the buggers, my daughter is really spider phobic. The peppermint spray around windows and doors is supposed to stop them wanting to come into your house the same thing applies to horse chestnuts. You are supposed to leave them on windowsills and by doors.

I did 'The Friendly Spider ' thing at London Zoo after someone recommended it on here. It's changed my life, I know that won't help tonight but you really must look into it. I really enjoyed the whole thing and it's so liberating not having the fear and panic anymore. Turn the light off and mr spider will disappear Smile

EmNetta · 24/06/2017 02:26

"The Friendly Spider" thing does sound good, but I can't get to London these days. What do you mean about them disappearing when the light's turned off - unseen in the dark or gone off in search of some light?

Thanks for more info Mumsnetters, and for friendly company while I'm alone with the beasties. Anyone planning to stay up all night?

Sorry to hear about Miss Red - is she young enough to learn about " little spider friends"., as above?

Back when I really panicked, I found out that hairspray slowed them down enough for me to hit and kill them first time, which a friend told me was life-changing information for both her daughters, so I'm mentioning it here. Am still unsure why some of the creatures dash towards me on sight - before this, I could manage to dispose of them outside with a postcard and old glass.

Spiders run towards light, they don't mean to scare you! Try hypnosis, apparently phobias are really easy to cure. I was told to chant in my head "spiders aren't scary " and I've never had a single panic attack since the zoo thing. Best money I ever spent Grin

EmNetta · 24/06/2017 03:20

I will try finding a hypnotist Nursey, and thanks for all the information.
Am grateful to everyone for helpful posts indeed. and will now attempt to sleep in spare room, although undecided about leaving a light on in furthest corner. 'Night All.

Afternoon Update:- Slept from dawn to alarm, but spare bed was really uncomfortable in present condition, so have decided to use own bed again tonight, even if it means sharing.
Meanwhile, I checked wikiHow for details of home-made deterrents, and have started spraying round and under bed. I plan to continue this until only the corner which once had a web is left (home?). Tuesday morning is when helper who dealt with previous one/web is due, so hope we can deal with this together.

Anyone else unhappy with spiders should check wikiHow, which also gives details of possible help.

Thanks again Mumsnetters.
