Does anyone use the Ariel professional laundry detergent?

Is it any better than the bog standard Ariel liquid you can buy in supermarkets? I have heard that powder is better than gels and liquids anyway, but is the professional line more effective?

Thx

I'm not sure about the professional stuff but powders are far better than liquids and gels.

Madbengalmum · 20/06/2017 16:05

Seems to be exactly the same just in a larger pack. I really haven't noticed any difference.

CrawlingNotRunning · 20/06/2017 19:11

Thanks for the replies. I am fed up with my washing machine smelling grotty. I do maintenance washes, leave the door open etc and it still smells. I heard that the gels and liquids contributed to that issue.

I have used the "professional" variants of quite a few (Ariel, Daz and Bold - could have others too, but don't particularly remember).

The advertising would have you believe they have more "pazzazz" than the commercially available version. I can't say I have noticed a huge difference, maybe on some deep down level it may make a difference (As in fabrics lasting a bit longer etc), but day to day laundry - no discernable difference.

But YY, you heard correct, powders are infinitely better than liquids (regardless of brand) as they contain bleaching agents, liquids can't contain them.

Actually, just this week, Persil is about to launch a new product offering the best of liquids (space saving, dosing, convenience) but still a "powder" - it's called Persil Power Gems and it's not a powder or liquid - it's a bit like those unstoppable scent bead things, but a detergent.

pawspaw · 24/06/2017 02:01

Is this an advert for Persil?!

e1y1 · 24/06/2017 16:12

No Pawspaw sorry if it sounds that way (although wish it were as I would then be getting paid for it).

Just mentioning it because the OP said they always use liquids and is paying the price for it. A lot of people won't use powder because of the drawbacks, (bulky, messy, hard to measure). But liquids wreck your machine over time. So just mentioned the new product as it is like a liquid in use, but won't deck your machine.

Hi, I've had the same issue but if you use soda crystals (£1 for a kg bag from any supermarket) whilst doing the maintenance wash (longest hottest wash) it makes a lot of difference plus I add dettol to the drum in the washing liquid dosage ball .

Strongly recommend avoiding the "professional" version of procter & gamble products like Ariel, Bold, Lenor, Fairy etc for two reasons. The formulation is no different to what you get in the standard versions, and they are also hugely overpriced. The key to look for is the price per wash - the "professional" versions are usually about twice to three times what you'd pay if you shopped round for the standard versions. The amount if times I've seen people sticking up with them at CostCo and wanted to scream at them that they were being seriously fleeced (but that perhaps is a different topic about how expensive a lot of stuff at CostCo actually is).

With regard to powders, it depends totally on what you're washing. Powders usually contain bleach, so will often fade colours quickly, so they're best for whites. They're also very unsuitable for more delicate materials and can risk damaging the material. Powders can also get very clogged up in your machine and lead to the kind of smells you want to avoid. Whatever you use, there's really no substitute for regular services cleans with a decent product that will clean and deodorise your washer.

If you do want to start using powders, then you can't really go wrong with Lidl's own brand. It's consistently rated among the very best by "Which?" and good housekeeping and is much cheaper than Ariel. Indeed, Good Housekeeping recently rated Lidl's own brand liquid / gel as the very best product on the market. Aldi's own brand stuff is also very good.

goingtotown · 15/03/2020 23:42

@CrawlingNotRunning A few dishwasher tablets or powder on a hot wash in your machine to stop the smell.

HopeClearwater · 16/03/2020 00:49

Just want to echo @THXY comment about Ariel Professional from Costco. Wears out your clothes quicker and fades fabrics. I’m returning to supermarket brands.

THXY · 16/03/2020 00:53

Yup, definitely one to avoid. Very overpriced and not good.
