Maggots in Outdoor Bin

rebeccatf · 02/06/2017 17:30

Does anybody know how to keep maggots out of my outdoor dustbins?
And what makes them appear in the first place?!

Flies lay eggs. Maggots hatch from the eggs. Can't see how it would be possible to keeps flies from getting into the bins.

Been in this situation before. Ensure your bin bags are always tied before putting them in your outside bin. Double bag particularly grim things like meat. Once bin empty, bleach and boiling water. Shut the bin lid and after a while you will return to dead maggots which will tip out with the water.

LotisBlue · 02/06/2017 17:37

Ime it's meat that they go for. Double bag it before you put it in the bin.

rebeccatf · 02/06/2017 17:39

Thank you both!
Would nappies be better double bagged? Or put into a separate bin bag?

I buy a great product called 'Bin Buddy'. You can get it in the supermarkets, it is a sort of granular powder that you sprinkle over the top of your rubbish and it kills the flies, the eggs and the maggots.

Fly population appears to be particularly bad at the moment where I live, makes me feel as though my house is dirty - probably the milder weather.

Perfect thank you! I will have to have a look!
They make my skin crawl.
Keep getting worried that flies will lay eggs in my house when I leave the windows open!
Although my house is clean!

I doubt they would lay in your house, don't worry. Definitely bag shitty nappies. You should be ok if your bin isn't going to be left for ages and ages. The Nappy bags are biodegradable generally now aren't they but they shouldn't perish for the length of time they should be in your bin.

close the lid and ignore
just open and close the lid very quickly if you need to :o

My household waste bin is emptied fortnightly and I know some areas are every 3 weeks. Luckily I don't have to dispose of nappies and rarely cook meat but cannot imagine the smell in the hot weather when people have to go 2 or 3 weeks with these things in their bin. IMO it encourages people to put them in public litter bins (even though where I live there are stickers on them warning of fines up to £1000) as I see these things in there, especially nappy bags. I have a dog and am allowed I mean compelled to put these in public bin - would hate to have to put them in my wheelie bin for weeks at a time.

Thanks everyone!

Open lid, spray liberally with fly spray and close lid. Kills maggots and any lurking flies.

gemmatay · 11/06/2017 15:10

can't tell you what makes them appear in the fist place, might be the bacteria or something. We've had the same problem before and we used something called bin buddy This will clear out the maggots for good.

AaarghUsername · 19/07/2017 17:57

I have had this problem on particularly hot days. I liberally applied Zoflora (i.e, emptied almost a whole bottle) into it, particularly coating the ledges, lid and rim of the wheelie bin.

Also, we had a problem with flies laying eggs on the cat's food (seems to be minutes after it's been put down too!), so I tend to seal that in a bag with a splash of Zoflora, to stop any of the buggers hatching before putting in the bin.

Bin buddy from the super market or amazon, it's fab.
